Duke's Camp
Okavango North

Accommodation
Taking their cue from the style and panache of the original Jack’s Camp, located in the Makgadikgadi Pans, Duke’s Camp revels in the same vintage safari aesthetics of plush fabrics, Persian rugs, hand-carved four-poster beds, brass fittings and African and natural history memorabilia. Duke’s Camp brings the same yesteryear charm to the wilderness of the Okavango Delta.

The camp is named in honour of Sarefo ‘Duke’ Sarefo, the custodian of this bountiful piece of wilderness. Duke was born 80 years ago on the very island that the camp now occupies, and his ancestral roots run deep into these sandy soils.

Duke’s Camp has 8 stylish canvas tents resting on raised wooden decks, widely spaced under shady trees with mesmerizing views of the lagoon. There are 5 twins and 2 doubles and a family room, each with an ensuite bathroom, flush loos, indoor showers, and private veranda.

The main mess area includes a small comfy lounge (with a well-stocked drinks cabinet), tea, library and dining area, with a 24-seater vintage dining table. There is a swimming pool and separate jetty, and in front of the mess tent a ‘firepit’ from which to look out over the lagoon or up at the night sky.

The sister camp to Duke’s Camp is called Duke's East and is similar in style and distinguishing characteristics, with the added option of becoming an exclusive-use camp for family and friends to enjoy. With four spacious tents (1 x double, 1 x twin and 1 x family tent with private plunge pool) set beneath a canopy of ebony and leadwood trees, it is the slightly more colourfully designed annex to the main property.

Location
The camp ist located in the semi-private game rich NG12 Sekwana Concession on the northern fringes of the Okavango Delta, just north of the renowned Duba Concession. At around 935 square kilometres, the concession encompasses a good part of the Selinda Spillway and stretches from the Okavango Delta to the Selinda Reserve. It used to be a concession that was lesser used for safaris but this is changing quickly with reputable operators moving in and wildlife quickly getting used to the game drive vehicles.

Semi-private means that various safari operators use the area and there is also presence of villages in the north and west of this community concession. The vetenary fence (buffalo fence) that is still present (but should be removed soon) is in a dilapidated state and animals can cross pretty freely.

Duke’s Camp lies on Kgao Island and is accessed by light aircraft to Kadizora airstrip, followed by a short onward transfer to camp. Flight time to Maun in a Cessna Caravan is 45 minutes, and 1 hour 20 minutes to Kasane.

Wildlife
Zebra, giraffe, buffalo, elephant and antelope including wildebeest, kudu and red lechwe are all commonly found here and sightings of leopards, lions and wild-dogs are all getting quite common. Although most of the land is dryer than the concessions to the south, crocodiles and hippos are present in the rivers and lagoons ... and in some areas the rare and elusive Sitatunga antelope can be spotted.

Activities
The camp offers combination of land, water and air experiences - morning & afternoon game drives, boating, mokoro, fishing from 01 March to 31 December and scenic helicopter flights (at an additional cost).
