Ghoha Hills
Savuti
Accommodation
Ghoha Hills Savuti Lodge was built to take full advantage of the marvellous views. The eleven immaculate safari tents with en-suite bathrooms and terraces offer great views and privacy. Two of the tents are double sized and cater for families of up to four people. Getting up early is rewarded with freshly baked bread rolls and hot coffee. In the evening, the open fire blazes in the boma and on starry evenings guests are spoilt with a braai (barbecue dinner).
Location
Ghoha Hills is situated north-east of the Okavango Delta in the Chobe National Park, in the vicinity of the Savuti Marsh. The Savuti Channel carries water in some years, in other years it remains dry. This depends on the flood water, which normally reaches the Okavango Delta in April and of course varies from year to year. The Savuti water vanishes in the Savuti Marsh, a wetland that only exists if the channel carries water.
The lodge can be reached by small aircraft or 4x4 vehicle. It is a 40-minute drive from the airstrip to the lodge.
Wildlife
In the dry winter months, the elephant herds migrate to the permanent waters of the Linyanti. However, the big bulls often stay behind and when everything is dry and dusty, these huge beasts visit the lodge's waterhole and fight over the remaining water. The migration is mainly determined on how much water the Savuti Channel carries or if the channel dries up completely.
Lion, leopard and wild dog are often seen. When the channel dries up, more and more animals are attracted and fight for the last remaining water sources. The area has long been known for lions hunting elephants in large prides.
Activities
Game drives in open 4x4 off-road vehicles to explore the Savuti region. There is also the option of visiting the ancient San rock paintings of the Gubatsa Hills - a small hilly outcrop that is a striking landmark in the area.
Good to know
The Savuti Marsh is frequently visited by mobile safaris and self-drivers. The area is therefore not as exclusive and remote as the camps in the Inner Okavango Delta and guests will encounter a good number of other vehicles on their game drives.
