Leroo La Tau
Boteti River
Accommodation
Leroo La Tau, translated as ‘lions’s paw’, is built on cliffs over 10 metres above the Boteti River, offering a vantage point that ensures unsurpassed views of the river and the Makgadikgadi Pans to the east.
The lodge features twelve luxurious thatched and glass-fronted chalets with en-suite bathrooms, each unit raised on a wooden platform. One of the rooms is a family suite that consists of two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms each. With their prime location facing east and on the edge of the Boteti River, each guest room offers exceptional views. Wifi is available in the rooms.
The main area includes the dining area, a lounge, the bar and a swimming pool in front of the lodge. For the kids, the chill-out area in the upper floor is quite popular. From the Boma area, that is often used as a venue for dinner under the stars or simply to sit around the fire, a path leads down to the river and the hide.
Location
Located on the western boundary of Makgadikgadi Pans National Park (MPNP), Leroo La Tau sits northwest of Khumaga Village overlooking the exceptionally scenic Boteti River, which has been flowing since 2008. The camp is easily accessible from Maun - just a 90 minute drive on good tarred roads, with only the last 5 kms on a gravel road. Alternatively, fly to Motopi airsrtip, a 30 minute drive to Leroo La Tau.
Wildlife
The zebra usually congregate at the river during the dry season from earliest April/May to October, joining the resident game like wildebeest, giraffe, kudu and impala. The camp is the perfect vantage point to observe, how the animals come down to the river to drink and bath. They move back to the Nxai Pan area once the rains start in November/December and remain there until March.
The zebras are followed closely by the predators: lion with their impressive black manes, leopard and cheetah using the surrounding bushes as cover, packs of wild dog, jackal and hyena.
Activities
Full day and half day game drives into Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. Boating on the Boteti is water dependant but should be possible from Aug to December. There is a hide below the lodge at water level with the Boteti River, ideal for viewing wildlife on the rivers edge.
A sleep-out under the stars in the heart of the Makgadikgadi Pans is included in a 3-night stay. Please note: Owing to their remote location within the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, the Makgadikgadi Pans themselves are not visited on daily scheduled activities from Leroo La Tau.
Explore the vastness of Nxai Pan, Baines Baobabs and the Makgadikgadi salt pans on an exciting day excursion. This trip is included with a 3-night stay.
