Meno a Kwena
Boteti River
Accommodation
Meno a Kwena is a non-fussy camp with 10 classic tents perched on a 100-foot high clifftop overlooking the Boteti River and offering some of the best ‘armchair’ game viewing in Botswana. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor shower, and there are two family units, both with inter-leading tents (one with three beds for children, one with 2 beds), perfect for the kids.
The canvas lounge and dining tents are piled high with books and trinkets, and decorated with old-world artefacts, and the piece de resistance is a sculpted crocodile! And it’s not there for no reason – Meno a Kwena literally translates as “teeth of the crocodile.” Keep an eye on the river below from just about any comfy chair in the living area, or plunge into the rocky swimming pool, and watch the animals doing the same below you.
The camp welcomes children of all ages. Pleaes note that only limited Wi-Fi is available in camp.
Location
Located on the western boundary of Makgadikgadi Pans National Park (MPNP), Meno a Kwena is situated on tribal land overlooking the exceptionally scenic Boteti River, which has been flowing since 2008. The camp is easily accessible from Maun - just a 90 minute drive on good tarred roads, with only the last 5 kms on a gravel road. Alternatively, fly to Motopi airsrtip, a 30 minute drive to Meno a Kwena.
Wildlife
The zebra usually congregate at the river during the dry season from earliest April/May to October, joining the resident game like wildebeest, giraffe, kudu and impala. The camp is the perfect vantage point to observe, how the animals come down to the river to drink and bath. They move back to the Nxai Pan area once the rains start in November/December and remain there until March.
The zebras are followed closely by the predators: lion with their impressive black manes, leopard and cheetah using the surrounding bushes as cover, packs of wild dog, jackal and hyena.
Activities
Full day and half day game drives into Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, cultural walks with the Kalahari Bushmen, wildlife viewing at the river at eye-level from the floating game-viewing hide, boating on the Boteti (water dependant but should be possible from Aug to December).
Additional options and at extra costs are a sleep-out under the stars in the heart of the Makgadikgadi Pans and day trips to Nxai Pan, usually during the rainy season from December to March because the zebras and wildebeest give birth at Nxai Pan at this time of the year.
