Shinde Camp
Okavango Delta
Accommodation
Nestled on a lush palm island in the heart of the northern Okavango Delta, Shinde is an iconic camp and one of the first camps to be built in the Okavango Delta. It is perched on the edge of the picturesque Shinde Lagoon.
Shinde was rebuilt in 2020. The camps main area is built in a “treehouse style” comprising of lounges, dining areas (indoor and outdoor) and a fire deck all with beautiful views over the permanent lagoon and under the shade of ebony and mangosteen trees. A sandy pathway leads to the tented chalets and the swimming pool.
Each of the 8 tents comprises of a large bedroom with en-suite bathroom, indoor and outdoor shower. Families are accommodated in a two-bedroom family tent with shared en-suite bathroom, sleeping a maximum of 5 people. Five tents look out towards the open plains, which are often filled with grazing antelope. The three tents belonging to the Shinde Enclave all face in the opposite direction, overlooking the papyrus waterways.
Shinde Enclave is an exclusive ‘camp within a camp’ and caters for a maximum of eight guests in 3 rooms (2 standard Shinde tents + the Shinde family tent). The Shinde Enclave guest will then use their very own private main area that comes with a bar, lounge, dining room, mini library, outside fire deck and sun loungers.
Location
Shinde is part of the private Shinde Concession (91 km²). The concession is relatively small compared to other concession in the Okavango Delta, but offers a very diverse habitat.
The concession lies in the north of the Okavango Delta and shares a boundary with the Kwara concession to the north, the world famous Moremi Game Reserve to the east and the Moanachira river system to the west. Shinde is located in the south west in a stand of typical island trees and shrubs and on the edge of the Shinde lagoon.
Shinde is accessed by light aircraft. Flight time to Maun in a Cessna Caravan is about 30 minutes, and 1 hour 30 minutes to Kasane. Driving time from Shinde Airstrip to the camp is approximately 5 minutes.
Wildlife
The area is home to an astounding array of animal and bird life, including lion, hyena, leopard, cheetah and wild dog. Herds of elephants also frequent the area, as well as buffalo, giraffe, zebra, sitatunga, lechwe, impala and hippos.
Activities
Shinde can offer both water and land activities year round. Motorboats or Mokoro are used to explore the unique aquatic habitat of the Okavango Delta. Game Drives are conducted with not more than 4 guests per vehicles, ensuring a window seat for everybody. For the more adventurous, guided walks are also available as well as fishing.
Helicopter scenic flight with a champaign stop can be booked as an additional extra.
Because the camp is located in a private concession, night driving with a searchlight and off-road driving for special animal observation is allowed. Close-up shots are guaranteed.
