Sitatunga Private Island
Okavango North
Accommodation
Sitatunga Private Island Camp is a private island and one of the few locations in the Okavango Delta where the rare aquatic Sitatunga antelope can be spotted. Boating on the lagoons and channels surrounding the camp is the main activity in addition to walking. It is deep Okavango Delta and, as such, is also rich in birding.
Sitatunga Private Island Camp accommodates a maximum of 4 guests in two large, tented suites plus the guests that stay in the private 2-bedroom Sitatunga Private Island Suite. Each suite has an en-suite bathroom with copper tub, indoor & outdoor shower, flush loo, dressing area, double basins and wooden decking with a private verandah and a private swimming pool.
Sitatunga Private Island Camp is designed with giant basket shapes as a reference to the Bayei and other local Okavango fishing ancestries. A long walkway leads from the main area to a floating deck where the Sitatunga team welcomes guests back from their evening boating activity with drinks around a crackling fire.
Location
Sitatunga Private Island Camp is located just north of Duba Plains Camp. Access is via the Duba Plains airstrip, followed by a scenic helicopter flight of approximately 10 minutes. Alternatively, guests can access Sitatunga Private Island Camp from Duba Plains by motorised boat transfer. Flight time from Maun to Duba in a Cessna Caravan is 30 minutes, and 1 hour 20 minutes to Kasane.
The Okavango River, which originates in Angola, is the lifeline of the Okavango Delta. The so-called panhandle is a stretch of approximately 70km where the water pushes into the Okavango Delta as a river with strong current, and Sitatunga Island is located just before it fans out into the alluvial plains and papyrus swamps of The Delta.
Wildlife
This is a water based camp and not the place for big cats, but perfect for spotting elephants, crocodiles, and hippos ... and of course the rare and elusive Sitatunga antelope. This camp works well as an extension to the game rich Duba Plains.
Activities
With a maximum of just 4 guests (plus the guests in the suite), Sitatunga Private Island Camp offers complete flexibility. Main focus are water-based activities, there are no game drives available. Head out on a flat-bottomed motorised boat to view elephants, crocodiles and hippos or explore the Okavango Delta's permanent channels by mekoro (traditional canoe). Tag and release fishing is available from March to December each year. Guided walks are on offer, either off camp or on paradise island which is a 60-minute boat ride from camp.
