Chobe Savuti
The Chobe Savuti area is considered one of the best safari areas in the world. However, a self-drive route from Maun to Kasane leads directly through the Savuti area. On a safari in this area you usually encounter many more safari vehicles than on a safari in the Inner Okavango Delta.
The Savuti Channel, which connects the Linyanti area with the Savuti Marsh, was dry for many years. In the dry season, life in the Savuti area became hard and brutal and only the strongest animals survived. The elephant cows took the little ones on an arduous journey towards the Linyanti River, but the bulls stayed in the area. The few remaining waterholes were therefore a point of attraction and confrontation for many animals and dramas unfolded in front of visitors to the area.

The area also became famous because the lions joined together to form large packs and specialized in elephant hunting, partly due to a lack of alternatives. A night in Savuti, with lions roaring and chasing elephants all around, could be quite frightening. The question whether the channel carries water depends on the annual rainfall in Angola and thus on the flood water in the Okavango Delta. The Savuti feeds the Savuti Marsh and the very existence of the marsh also entirely depends on the existence of water in the Savuti channel.
The route from Maun to Kasane is a beautiful self-drive route that leads directly through the Savuti area. The providers of mobile safaris also stop here at private campsites. It is therefore not really ideal to use this area on a fly-in safari, the lodges in the private concession in the Inner Okavango Delta are a far better choice.
