Tsodilo Hills
UNESCO World Heritage Site
Over 4'500 rock paintings in a 10km² area
Off the beaten path
The Tsodilo Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are located west of the Okavango Delta: 4’500 rock paintings can be found in an area of just 10 km²!
The Tsodilo Hills are revered as a sacred site by locals who call them ‚the rocks that whisper’, which is not surprising, as the history of the past 10’000 years is recorded here in the form of countless rock paintings.
If you like rock paintings, then we can fly you out of the Okavango Delta, or any other location, for a day trip to the Tsodilo Hills. Flying low over the delta makes for a diverse and adventurous excursion.

It’s a very long way to drive from Maun to Sepupa, and then in a 4x4 to the Tsodilo Hills, where only a very rudimentary camp awaits. We hire a local San or Hambukushu guide with knowledge of the various paths in and around the Tsodilo Hills for our visit. It is important to note that this is a very remote area with minimum infrastructure, and you will need to hike and climb a little if you wish to see the paintings.
The site consists of three main hills known as the ‘male, ‘female’ and ‘child’ (40 m), and a fourth located a short distance away – legend has it that this is the first wife of ‘male’, who he later shunned when he saw the higher ‘female’… Various paths lead to the site, including the Rhino Trail, the Lion Trail and the Cliff Trail. Rock paintings can be seen everywhere, so visitors can either remain at the foot of the hills or climb to the very top of the main hill for a view of the world from above.
