Angama Safari Camp
Maasai Mara, Mara Triangle
Accommodation
The mobile Angama Safari Camp is booked exclusively for groups of 4 to 8 people and is set up at one of four different sites in the Mara Triangle. The classic, light-footprint tented camp captures the adventure of the glorious Golden Age of safaris, yet with a modern, fresh flair and highlighted attention to detail. Interiors echo the elements from big sister Angama Mara, such as red Fermob rocking chairs and furniture by master-weaver John Vogel.
The airy ensuite guest tents have been designed for landscape orientation in order to maximize the light and views of the Maasai Mara plains. Each features an exert-large bed, desk, dressing room, vanity, separate toilet and double bucket shower.
The mess tent contains a dining area with a long family table and a cozy lounge to linger. At the obligatory fireplace guests can enjoy Out-of-Africa-romance under the starry sky.
Location
There are daily scheduled flights from Nairobi Wilson directly to Angama Mara Airfield, which take about 45 minutes. Sister lodge Angama Mara sits on the northern tip of the Mara Triangle, which is defined by the Oloololo Escarpment, the Mara River and the border to Tanzania in the south.
Angama Safari Camp will be set up south and west of Angama Mara (along the Oloololo Escarpment) at four different sites. The Mara Triangle comprises some 500 km² and has been managed for many years by the Mara Conservancy.
The Maasai Mara itself abuts the Serengeti to the north to form the border with Tanzania. The reserve covers an area of approx. 1'510 km² and receives water via the Sand River, the Talek River and, of course, the Mara River.
Wildlife
The Maasai Mara is home to one of the highest concentrations of big cat in Africa and more than 50 species of raptor. Lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, buffalo and elephant are high on the must-see list of most visitors here, and it is indeed the most likely place to get a snapshot of all of them.
Additionally, July sees the arrival of the first ca. two million wildebeest, zebra and Thompson’s gazelle that migrate from the Serengeti to feast on the fresh green grass of the Maasai Mara. They remain until September, when they make their way south again towards the Serengeti. The animals traverse the Mara River, where hungry crocodiles lie in wait for their prey, a spectacle known as ‘river crossings’.
Activities
Game drives, balloon flights (additional costs).
The game drives take place in the Mara Triangle where you can expect to meet less other game drive vehicles than on the eastern side of the Mara River. With a dedicated safari vehicle, guide and safari camp team, each day’a program is entirely up to the guests to decide.
