Elsa's Kopje
Meru National Park

Accommodation
Unashamedly romantic and beautifully styled, Elsa’s Kopie is sculpted into Mughwango Hill, above the site of George Adamson’s original camp where he raised and released orphan lions. The hill was the playground of Elsa, the lioness.

Each of the 6 cottage suites is crafted around the rocks, with open sitting room, veranda and spacious bathroom, each with breathtaking views. A brand-new and spacious 2-bedroom family cottage, as well as a Private House consisting of 2 bedrooms, large dining and sitting room, private garden and infinity swimming pool and 3 Honeymoon Suites with romantic outside baths complete the lodgings.

An infinity pool is perched on the side of the hill, the views are indeed infinite! There is a fertile spring to the east of the hill and guests can watch herds of elephant, buffalo and giraffe make their way across the plains below.

Elsa’s Kopje is one of only two lodges in the National Park, and guests will have this vast wilderness practically to themselves.

Location
Elsa’s Kopje lies in the heart of Meru National Park, on small rocky Mughwango hill that affords 360 degree views that stretch from Mt Kenya to the west, to virtually infinity to the east.

Meru National Park incorporates Bisanadi, Kora, Rahole and Mwingi National Reserves. It is situated right on the equator and covers 870km². The park was established in 1968.

There are scheduled flights from Nairobi Wilson airport into Meru National Park.

Wildlife
Meru National Park has wide range of habitat and wildlife, from cool forests at 1000m to the west, dropping down to 300m semi-desert plains with giant baobab and commiphora trees.

It has thirteen clear spring fed rivers lined with palms and riverine forest, and home to basking hippo. This is lion and elephant country, but also has many rare species including caracal, the beautiful Lesser Kudu, aardwolf, and over 400 species of birds.

The National Park incorporates an 84km² rhino sanctuary, home to over 70 rhinos, both black and white.

Activities
Game drives in open vehicles, visits of the rhino sanctuary as well as pre-dinner game drives with red-light spotlights, guided bush walks, day excursions to Tana River, fishing, cultural visits, bush breakfasts and sundowners are the most popular activities at Elsa’s Kopie.

Good to know
Meru National Park was made famous in the 1960s by Joy & George Adamson, who reintroduced their beloved lioness “Elsa” into the wild. They wrote a book about their experience which was made into a feature film “Born Free”.

The days are warm, rising to maximum of 30 deg C, but comfortable with minimum humidity, and the evenings are cool.
