Laragai House
Borana Conservancy, Laikipia

Accommodation
Laragai House is an exclusive-use family home set in the Borana Conservancy in Kenya's Laikipia County. Laragai House is set within a rich and colourful garden, with a heated swimming pool and deck overlooking a small dam, which attracts herds of elephant and other wildlife.

Laragai House is situated just 8 kilometres from Borana Lodge. The story of the house goes back to two English Lords - Michael & Valentine Cecil. The Cecils built Laragai House as an idyllic weekend get-away in 1993. Translated to mean “The Place To Be”, Laragai House sits on the edge of a 3,000 foot escarpment with staggering views of Mount Kenya (5,199m) and the Northern Frontier District.

The house is filled with an exquisite collection of furnishings and decor. Custom-made ebony furniture, dark-wood antiques, grand bronzes of rhino and elephant, antique swords mounted on the walls, charming family photographs, large 19th-century gold mirrors and wildlife paintings from all over Africa. The extensive game room can keep the whole family entertained with table tennis, croquet and boules. There is also a clay tennis court with racquets and balls provided.

All 9 guest rooms at Laragai have a unique design. There are 3 en-suite master bedrooms with fire places (Lord Valentine's & Lord Michael's former bedrooms, and the newer, stand-alone Lucilla Cottage), 3 large en-suite double rooms without fireplaces, 1 en-suite twin room with two queen sized beds and 1 twin room with two queen sized beds sharing a bathroom with a children’s room with twin beds.

Location
Laikipia County rolls north of Mount Kenya towards the rim of the Great Rift Valley. The plateau’s altitude and almost equatorial latitude brings perfectly temperature weather. Evenings are cool and days are typically long and warm. The geology is as divers as the wildlife; forested valleys, riverine tracts and open grassy savannas. Due to the high altitude of Borana (1,900 - 2,000m), Laragai is malaria free.

Laragai House lies in the eastern side of Laikipia within the famous Borana Conservancy. Borana Lewa Conservancy is a 90’000 acre conservation archetype. Borana, Lewa and the neighbouring ranches and communities are pioneering a collaborative conservation approach that gives animals access to more wilderness and integrates free-ranging cattle ranching. Open fences and corridors now create safe passages for animals to follow their instinctive migration routes. The results speak for themselves - over the last 20 years Laikipia is the only part of Kenya where wildlife numbers are increasing.

Shared scheduled flights can be booked from Nairobi to Lewa Airstrip, follwed by a 1-hour drive to Laragai. As an option, a private charter flight takes guests directly to Borana Airstrip, which is only 10 minutes away from Laragai House. There is also a heli pad.

Wildlife
There is a good concentration of game in the Borana Conservancy. Expect to see lion, cheetah, leopard, buffalo, elephant, reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk and especially black and white rhino.

Activities
Included are private game drives in the Borana Conservancy, walking safaris, tracking black and white rhino on foot, mountain biking. Excluded are any outsourced activities and activities beyond Borana Conservancy such as horse riding, helicopter safaris, e-biking, visits to the Ngare Ndare Forest, visits to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, fly-camping and cultural Maasai village visits.

Horse riding is big in Borana Conservancy. Two sets of stables cater for all riding abilities.

There is also plenty to do while staying at home. The house has a clay tennis court, games room, satellite TV, a large selection of DVDs, table tennis room, croquet and boules, gym & yoga equipment.
