Offbeat Ndoto
Maasai Mara, Mara North Conservancy
Accommodation
With just four luxury tents and one luxury suite Offbeat Ndoto offers a very private way to experience the wonders of the Mara North Conservancy.
Each of Offbeat Ndoto's tents offer good views over the valley and look down to the Olare Orok River. The tents are raised on natural rock bases built from locally sourced river rock and have a large outside veranda perfect for watching the wildlife that strolls through the valley. Facing almost east, your veranda is a good spot to catch the first sunlight in the early morning and enjoy a first cup of tea or coffee. The bedroom is furnished with a king-sized bed, a desk and armchair and has an en-suite bathroom with rain shower. Additionally there is a small lounge area with day bed and safari chairs for relaxing or reading a book.
The Offbeat Ndoto luxury suite has a private setting with stunning views, its own sitting/dining room and fireplace. The suite is suited for families, as it features a second bedroom. It also comes with exclusive vehicle use.
Location
Offbeat Ndoto is located in the Mara North Conservancy (324 km²), which borders to the north with the actual Maasai Mara Game Reserve. The conservancy is an amalgamation of some 800 Maasai landowners and twelve safari camps, all of who have joined forces to offer their land to sustainable tourism.
The wildlife in the Mara North is fantastic and exciting game drives are guaranteed. The number of vehicles here is naturally much lower than the publically accessible Maasai Mara Game Reserve.
The camp is reached by air from Nairobi Wilson via the Mara North Airstrip; flight time from Nairobi Wilson is approximately 45 minutes. The Offbeat camps sit in the eastern part of the conservancy and the drive to the camp takes approximately 45 minutes, resprectively more than one hour with game viewing en route.
Wildlife
The Maasai Mara is home to one of the highest concentrations of big cat in Africa and more than 50 species of raptor. Lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, buffalo and elephant are high on the must-see list of most visitors here, and it is indeed the most likely place to get a snapshot of all of them.
Additionally, July sees the arrival of the first ca. two million wildebeest, zebra and Thompson’s gazelle that migrate from the Serengeti to feast on the fresh green grass of the Maasai Mara. They remain until September, when they make their way south again towards the Serengeti. The animals traverse the Mara River, where hungry crocodiles lie in wait for their prey, a spectacle known as ‘river crossings’.
Activities
Day and night game drives, bush walking, bush picnics, visit to a local Maasai village, balloon flights (additional costs).
Guides are allowed to leave the tracks in the Mara North Conservancy, which means very close animal encounters are possible.
Game drives take place in the conservancy, but also cross into the actual Maasai Mara Game Reserve, which is particularly popular during the great migration. It is not unusual for guides to pack breakfast and lunch and spend the whole day out with guests to witness one fo the River Crossings. Night drives are allowed in the private conservancy, but not in the game reserve.
