Ol Malo is a privately owned family ranch perched on an escarpment in Kenya’s Northern Laikipia. This high quality operation includes a wide range of activities, a private house and a 4 bedrooms lodge, all personally hosted by the owner family. Ol Malo offers a cozy and yet lush mix of home comfort and natural luxury, as well as a very particular and quite unique style of buildings that has evolved through the generations.
Ol Malo Lodge is an exclusive 4 guest room boutique property, ideal for couples or honeymooners. The rooms are designed and built in a traditional local style with rare hand made furnishings, featuring en-suite bathrooms and oversized hot tubs. Large picture windows frame a constantly changing landscape, overlooked by Mount Kenya. Nestled in the cliffs each room provides its own viewing deck and complete privacy.
Ol Malo House is an opulent 6 bedroom private house suited for families or a larger group of friends. A generous sitting and dining room with open fireplaces is encircled by 3 en-suite double bedrooms. Separate cottages accommodate a further 3 double bedrooms.
Both properties have very comfortable public areas and a beautiful infinity pool. Guests can also choose to spend a night in the leopard hide, stargazing in the tree house, or in a tented fly camp.
Location
There are scheduled flights from Nairobi Wilson airport to Loisaba Airstrip or by private charter to Ol Malo Airstrip. It is a 50min drive from Loisaba Airstrip to Ol Malo Lodge which is charged extra.
Ol Malo is set on a on a substantial and very scenic private reserve on the west bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River, in the Laikipia North area of North-Central Kenya. Laikipia North is an elevated plateau of arid and open rangelands around 100 km northwest of Mount Kenya, which are renowned for their healthy climate.
Wildlife
The greater area is largely reclaimed farmland and there is a significant amount of human habitation around. Nonetheless, theres is a broad range of wildlife to be found. Elephant, Buffalo, Eland, Lelwels Hartebeest, Greater Kudu, Waterbuck, Klipspringer, Warthog, Wild dog, Leopard, Cheetah, Lion, spotted and striped Hyena and the special Northern Five (Reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich) are regular sightings on safari in Laikipia.
Activities
Activities include open vehicle safari with a knowledgeable Samburu guide, horse-back safari, camel safari, walking safari, bush picnics, fishing, waterhole hides, mountain biking and very natural Samburu cultural interactions including medical plant walks.
Good to know
Ol Malo is located in a very low-risk malaria area due to the high altitude.
