Solio Lodge
Solio Conservancy, Laikipia

Accommodation
Centered in the middle of an extensive, private conservancy, the lodge offers panoramic views of the nearby hills and Mount Kenya in the distance.

The five luxurios cottages with private decks have a private lounge area with open fire for the cooler evenings and large glass pane windows to take in the panoramic view. The en-suite bathrooms have double sinks, showers, baths, separate toilets and dressing areas. One of the rooms is a family unit encompassing one twin cottage and one double cottage with a shared living area.

The main area contains a spacious seating area as well as a restaurant. On the ‚upper‘ deck of the main area is a little curio shop and lounge area with views over the lawn that stretches in front of the lodge. A wooden deck at the end of the lawn is built around a huge accacia tree and serves as venue for meals under the stars.

Location
There are scheduled flights from Nairobi Wilson airport to Nanyuki Airstrip (35 minutes), followed by a road transfer between Nanyuki and Solio (1.5 hrs). Guests can also arrive by private charter to Solio’s airstrip, just a 10-minute drive from the lodge.

The Solio Conservancy is a 180 square kilometres private ranch that lies on the southern fringes of Laikipia in the broad valley between Mount Kenya and the peaks of Aberdare Mountains. Solio Lodge is situated in the Highlands region at an altitude of about 2035m above sea level so days are warm but nights can become cool and guests need to pack warm clothes. Due to the high altitude, Solio is malaria free.

Wildlife
The area is good for rhino viewing as it operates an important and successfull rhino breeding project. There are over 250 rhinos on Solio Game Conservancy and it is internationally recognized as the most successful private rhino breeding conservancy in Kenya.

You can also expect to see lion, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, leopard, cheetah and plains game such as eland, oryx, impala, waterbuck, thomson‘s gazelle and warthog.

Activities
Game drives, bush breakfasts, walking safaris, moutain biking in the conservancy. The stables are home to six horses and riders of all abilities can enjoy Solio on horseback. Visit a local working farm about an hour’s drive from Solio that also produces coffee and tea.

At extra costs, a visit of Aberdare National Park (extra, 30min drive from Solio) is available to guests who stay longer at the lodge as well as helicopter flights to Mount Kenya.

Good to know
Each guest that stays at Solio pays conservation fees that go towards the conservation of the endangered white and black rhino as well as other species within the protected area. Solio Lodge is also involved in education and health programs in the local communities and schools.
