Elsa the lion - 'Born Free'
Meru National Park was founded in 1966 and is known for the BBC documentary «The Genesis Project», which describes how the National Park was rebuilt, and of course for the books by Joy Adamson (including «Born Free»), a British-Austrian naturalist who became a bestseller with her story about the lioness Elsa.
In the 1980s, the park was severely neglected and the game population was massively reduced due to heavy poaching. Today the park is well protected again, but the animals are still a little shy. Due to the relatively few visitors and the small number of camps, a safari here still feels very authentic.
