Location
Le Morne peninsula in the southwest of Mauritius is famous for its legendary sunsets. The distance to the airport is just over an hour drive. In the background St. Regis, the striking rock «Le Morne Brabant» rises (556 m). In the past, slaves – so-called maroons – who have escaped hid on its summit in the almost impassable cliffs and caves. When slavery was abolished in 1835, the soldiers of the British army climbed up to spread the good news. The Maroons feared another captivity and many of the slaves jumped to their deaths in desperation - without ever knowing that they had done so as free men. February 1st has remained a holiday to this day and the peninsula is a UNESCO world heritage site.
