Benguerra Lodge
Benguerra Island
Accommodation
Benguerra Lodge is situated on the paradisiacal Benguerra Island (Bazaruto Archipelago) in the Bazaruto National Park. Sheltered between the island and the mainland, the turquoise blue sea in front of the lodge is warm and calm. The two cabanas, ten casinhas and the family villa are tastefully furnished and, although the ocean is just a few steps away, each has its own small plunge pool.
Meals are fresh, delicious and characterised by a taste of the ocean. Reception is located near the main building, along with a shop, lounge, dining area, bar, large outdoor area for relaxation, and a pool located close to the beach.
Location
The Bazaruto Archipelago is located off the east coast of Mozambique, not far from the town of Vilanculos, which is a two-hour flight from Johannesburg. Guests are expected and greeted on arrival at Vilanculos airport and accompagnied to their 7-min helicopter flight to Benguerra Lodge.
The island is inhabited so guests can watch fishermen sailing their traditional dhows or women picking muscles in the shallow waters at low tide.
Your alternative on the same beach is Azura Lodge.
Activities
There is a lot to be discovered on Benguerra Island, not only in and on the water, but also on foot or by Land Rover. Personal service is taken very seriously, and guests are always accompanied by experienced guides.
The diving and snorkelling sites are varied with 13 different dive sites around the island, the most famous being 2-mile Reef. Dolphins that accompany you on the boat trip are always a source of excitement. The rare dugangs live here, but are very difficult to find. Whales can be observed from July to October.
The following activities are on offer: Diving, snorkelling, fishing, dhow trips (traditional sailing boats), picnic on a secluded beach, Land Rover trips to the freshwater lake, bird watching, hiking, village visits, kayaking, catamaran trips, riding and massages.
Good to know
There is a fully equipped dive center at Benguerra Lodge and diving is included in the rate. As everywhere in the archipelago, large sandbanks are exposed during low tide and swimming off the beach is then not possible.
