Nkwichi Lodge
Lake Niassa, Mozambique
Accommodation
With its six chalets, the charming Nkwichi Lodge was designed to offer guests the highest level of comfort and privacy. The central element at Nkwichi is the snow-white sandy beach, which remains unscathed by the six bungalows tucked away behind shadow-giving trees. The chalets are very spacious, each with outdoor shower and bathtub. There are two additional private houses for families or friends: Makolo House with two bedrooms, and the larger Songea House, both of which are located approximately 10 minutes walking distance from the lodge.
Location
Nkwichi Lodge is situated in Mozambique. Most guests are flown in via Malawi, as access via road from Mozambique is exceedingly difficult. Likoma Island can be accessed from Lilongwe (Malawi) by light aircraft in an hour, followed by a boat transfer to Cobué for a passport stamp (Mozambique), before the actual transfer to Nkwichi lodge. The part of Lake Malawi that belongs to Mozambique is known as Lake Niassa or Lago Niassa.
Activities
This crystal clear freshwater lake is home to more endemic species of fish than any other lake on earth. This makes Nkwichi the perfect place for diving or other water-based activities. Discover the surroundings in a canoe, in a traditional dhow sailing boat or on foot on a guided bush trek. Or simply enjoy time out in a hammock on one of the secluded coves.
Good to know
The Manda Wilderness Community Trust and Nkwichi Lodge cooperate closely to ensure that local communities profit from the increase in tourism. The trust runs the Manda Wilderness Community Conservation area, created to protect and manage a 120'000 hectare community reserve on Lake Niassa. With 15% of the cost of every overnight stay at Nkwichi going straight to the trust, your visit really helps.Nkwichi Lodge on the map
