Sussurro
Mozambique
Accommodation
Seated on the secluded shores of a warm turquoise lagoon in Southern Mozambique, Sussurro is a thoughtfully designed space for guests to align with nature. Sussurro was built by the community using 100% African sourced products, is powered by renewable energy, has zero plastic waste, goes organic wherever possible and only supports sustainable artisanal fishing and local farming. Sussurro offers excellent seafood and very kind, attentive and personalized service that goes way beyond of what you would expect in such a remote location. The owners Sarah Birkett & Adam Humphreys have spent years building their little paradise and it is now also yours to enjoy.
Six bungalows are set along the beach and include indoor and outdoor bathing facilities and generous water front verandahs. The rooms are dressed with furniture created and carved onsite and thoughtfully collected artisanal pieces from sub-saharan Africa. The design is puristically elegant, with stone floors and walls painted in earthy tones and a tall thatched roof that stretches down far to offer protection from the sun and heat. Understandably, you won't find air conditioning here, but the open design of the rooms and a ceiling fan provide a much welcomed air circulation in your room.
The main area encompasses two buildings, with an inviting lap pool in between. One building houses the guest bar and the restaurant, where Sussurro’s open plan kitchen breaks the traditional divide between host and guest. Only fresh local produce is served, ensuring support of the community’s local fishermen, organic farmer’s markets and sustainable traders. A gallery, a library and an open lounge area form the second building.
The complex is rounded off by a beautiful, private beach dotted with palm trees. A long jetty extends into the ocean to a platform that is an ideal location for yoga, pilates or to enjoy a massage. The end of the jetty is well suited to have a dip in the ocean at any time of the day, however, at high tide, swimming is possible directly from the beach.
Location
Sussurro is located north of Vilankulos on the remote peninsula of Nhamabue, which can be reached in about two hours by vehicle from Vilankulos. Access must be arranged before arrival and is via Inhassoro and then mostly along a beautiful stretch of beach. At the end of the peninsula, the 4x4 vehicle climbs up the last dune to find Sussurro well hidden on the western side of Nhamabue.
There is also the option to fly to Sussurro by helicopter. The heli pad is located about 2km south of Sussurro.

Motorised excursions are extra and must be paid for on site.
