Niassa Game Reserve
Remote Park in northern Mozambique
Twice the size of the Kruger National Park
Inselberg, open savannah, forest
Niassa National Park was lucky to have survived intact for the most part following the civil war. Because of its isolated position and lack of infrastructure, it has remained in its original state, (still) almost untouched by tourists.
The Rovuma River forms the border with Tanzania. On the Tanzanian side, the Niassa-Selous Game Corridor connects the Niassa Game Reserve with the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania to form a huge wilderness area. The Lugenda River is the largest tributary of the Rovuma. It rises at the border to Malawi and flows about 360km through the Niassa Game Reserve to the village of Negomano, where it meets the Rovuma. The second attraction in the park is the Mecula Inselberg, which rises like an ancient giant 1,441 meters above the landscape.
