Quirimbas Archipelago
Most of the 32 islands are not inhabited
Situated in Cabo Delgado's far north
Largely untouched underwater world
The archipelago is named after Quirimba Island, but the most historically important island in the archipelago is the sparsely populated Ibo Island. The archipelago shares its name with Quirimbas National Park, which is situated on the mainland. The regions in the north of Mozambique and the south of Tanzania belong to the few remaining untouched areas on Africa's east coast.
Pemba can be reached in 4 hours from Johannesburg, or from Dar-Es-Salam; the island is accessed by light aircraft. Pemba is situated in a huge bay with a relatively protected harbour. The rise of Pemba signalled the fall of Ibo Island. Visitors to Pemba are often astounded by the huge number of giant baobab trees that grow in and around the city. Pemba Airport is centrally located on a plateau, and arriving is quite an adventure, but that's half the reason for being in this part of the world in the first place.
