Located high on a ridge of the Sabi Sands Reserve, overlooking the picturesque Sand River, lies the family friendly Kirkman's Kamp. A lodge with a rich history, Kirkman’s expertly maintains the classical safari ambience of the original 1920s homestead that once stood on the very same spot. Harry Kirkman, a former farmer, turned his home into one of the first safari camps in the area and subsequently became a warden of the Sabi Sands Reserve.
Kirkman’s Kamp’s 12 air-conditioned guest cottages (including one family cottage) are reminiscent of an old farmstead, and each faces the glorious Sand River where elephants and other wild animals roam free. The cosy rooms each have an ensuite bathroom with a shower, plus a private outdoor veranda. Each house accommodates two cottages of 34m².
Kirkman’s Kamp has one Family Cottage, which is two regular cottages with an interleading doorway. The spacious Family Cottage has two bedrooms each with its own private ensuite bathroom and outdoor veranda.
The main house offers spacious sitting, dining and bar areas steeped in the colonial atmosphere of gracious style and luxury contain mementoes of a time long past. Rolling lawns lead down to the swimming pool area where you can also find the gym. In addition, there is also a massage room, a curio shop and a boma for traditional outdoor dining.
Location
The private Sabi Sands Reserve borders the Kruger National Park and grants access to a very game-rich safari area. Kirkman's Kamp sits on top of a hill in the southern section of the Sabi Sands Reserve and boasts fabulous views of the Sand River. It is located east of Lion Sands and in neighbourhood of the famous Mala Mala Game Reserve. It's premier sister lodge Tengile River Lodge is located only a short drive from Kirkmans.
The lodge has access to 10,500 hectares prime game viewing area, famous for its leopard sightings and with no borders to Kruger National Park.
There are direct flights from both Johannesburg and Capetown to Skukuza Airport followed by a short drive to camp.
Wildlife
The Sabi Sands area is renowned for its excellent game viewing, and encounters with the big five are almost guaranteed. Sigthings include elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, zebra and a vast variety of antelope and other species plus crocodiles and hippo in the rivers.
Activities
The lodge offers early morning and evening game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, interpretive bush walks and birdwatching. Spa and gym are available.
