Accommodation
Morukuru Ocean House is situated in De Hoop Nature Reserve and stands on top of a sand dune offering great views of the ocean. This private luxury lodge can accommodate 8 adults & 4 children (all ages are welcome!). The 4 double suites all have their own en-suite bathrooms, a wood-burning stove and glass fronts to the sea. The interior design is inspired by the surrounding fynbos dunes and is of the highest quality.
During the whale season guests can watch the whales directly from the house, either from the big terrace in front of the house or from the lounge / bar area in the upper floor. The wind-protected back part of the house includes a sparkling pool with sun loungers, an outdoor lounge and a vegetable garden. The indoor area features a large dining table and a romantic fireplace.
Location
The 36,000 ha De Hoop Nature Reserve is part of the Overberg region (Western Cape) and is located near the southern tip of Africa. De Hoop offers 51km of beaches and dunes, limestone cliffs, rock pools, wetlands and beautiful coastal fynbos. De Hoop conservation area is a World Heritage Site.
Morukuru Ocean House can be accessed by private charter. The duration of the flight from Cape Town International Airport to De Hoop Nature Reserve is +/- 40 minutes. Transfers by helicopter are possible as well, a platform is located close to Morukuru Ocean House. Self-Drivers need to observe the reserve's opening times, the gates open at 7am and close at 6pm. Driving time from Capetown is 3.5 hours or more. Morukuru Beach Lodge and the Bites Beach Café are about 10 minutes walk away.
Wildlife
De Hoop Nature Reserve is considered one of the best places in South Africa to see southern right whales. July to end of September is best for whale-watching, but there are good chances of sightings from June to early November. The de Hoop reserve also includes the coast off the reserve and any activities on the water are prohibited to esnure that the whales can rest here undisturbed before they begin their return journey back to the South Pole.
Rare or endangered animal species in the reserve include the Marine Big 5 (sharks, whales, dolphins, seals, penguins), as well as the Bontebok and Cape Mountain Zebra. Other animals you may see are Eland, the Cape clawless otter, baboons, rock dassies and the occasional rooikat (caracal) and Cape leopard.
The reserve is particularly known for its bird population. A 19 km vlei (wetland) stretches across the reserve, which is on the Ramsar list of Wetlands of International Importance.
Activities
During your stay you can choose to enjoy any of the following complimentary activities, completely tailored to your requirements:
- Guided marine walks (1-3 hours), allowing an insight in the amazing marine life in the rock pools in the immediate vicinity of Ocean House.
- Various guided fynbos walks and hikes (1-3 hours), showing the incredible diversity and beauty of the fynbos vegetation that is found in De Hoop Nature Reserve.
- Guided Mountain biking (1-3 hours), offering you an overview of the diversity of the area around Ocean House. Different routes are possible.
- Guided 4x4 fynbos nature drives, which allow you to explore areas of De Hoop Nature Reserve which are situated a little further from Ocean House. These nature drives also offer a good opportunity to see some of the local wildlife in the park.
- Land based whale watching from the house and the surrounding dunes (June-October)
- Sundowners on the sand dunes, overlooking the Indian Ocean.
- Sand boarding on the white sand dunes
- Snorkelling in the rock pools
- Kids activities like kite making and flying them
- Star gazing, using the telescope at Ocean House
- Tennis (at De Opstal, approximately 30 minutes from Morukuru Ocean House)
