Wildlife
Madikwe was newly established in 1991 when the land was purchased from white farmers and populated with hundreds of animals from all over Africa. Known as ‘Operation Phoenix’, this undertaking went down in South Africa’s history as an example of how farmland can be put to alternative use, earning both money through tourism and providing a necessary habitat for wildlife. The grazed pastures are recovering slowly but surely. The region, however, primarily comprises Kalahari sand and lacks high trees. Nevertheless, it is varied enough to support the Big 5 and many other species of animal. Today, Madikwe is home to elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah, hyena, lion, wild dog, zebra, giraffe and various species of antelope and bird – to name but a few.
Activities
Morukuru offers game drives, bushwalking and a swimming pool & spa.
Accompanied by an experienced guide, safaris are carried out either in the private concession or the wider Madikwe Game Reserve. Making sure the kids have as memorable a vacation as the adults, our team members are more than happy to keep younger guests entertained with any number of games. All houses come equipped with a TV, iPod dock, DVD and WiFi.
