Shamwari Game Reserve

Accommodation
Bayethe Lodge is one of six lodges located South Africa's Shamwari Game Reserve. This 25'000 m² malaria-free reserve offers an ideal alternative to Kruger Park, which is logistically difficult to combine with the Garden Route. The lodge comprises a total of twelve climate-controlled guest tents, each equipped with its own plunge pool, minibar, electric blankets for those cold winter nights, safe, tea/coffee station etc. Further facilities available at the main building include a swimming pool, lounge with TV, gift shop and a terraced restaurant.

Location
Shamwari Game Reserve is situated some 70 km northeast of Port Elizabeth and accessed by excellent roads.

Wildlife
Just 150 years ago, the Eastern Cape and probably the whole of Africa was full of wildlife, most of which disappeared due to the development of farmland and extensive hunting. In 1990, Adrian Gardiner, a businessman from Port Elizabeth realised a dream he had while growing up in Zimbabwe: To restore the area to its former glory. Buying up ever more farmland using the income he made from photo safaris, the Shamwari Game Reserve grew to become one of the largest game reserves focussing on animal and nature conservation in the Eastern Cape. Elephant, buffalo, lion, rhino, leopard, cheetah and much, much more can be encountered here.

Activities
Game drives, bushwalking upon request and spa treatments are available. Guests may also like to visit the ‘Born Free Foundation' - a sanctuary for big cat.

Good to know
Guests looking to get really close to nature can visit the Shamwari Explorer Camp - sleep in small tents amidst the bush and dine around the crackling campfire - wonderful! Activities here are limited to bushwalking, with tours beginning each Friday and lasting either two or three nights.
