Johannesburg - Pretoria
Johannesburg - South Africa’s largest city
Pretoria - the capital of South Africa
Gateway to southern Africa
Johannesburg is the economic centre of South Africa. It did not develop around a spectacular location, but grew more out of necessity when gold was discovered here in 1884. With five million inhabitants, it is currently South Africa’s biggest city. The old city centre was abandoned due to the high levels of crime, and the new business centre is now located in the city’s Sandton quarter. The capital Pretoria is situated a little further north, but has almost entirely merged with Johannesburg. Pretoria is famous for its flowering Jacaranda trees and its historical train station, which is the departing and terminal station for Rovos Rail.
