Pioneer Camp
Central Serengeti
Accommodation
Serengeti Pioneer camp is paying homage to the mobile camps of the 1930’s, a time when an African safari was truly a journey into the unknown. Comprising of 12 tented accommodations, all of which have en-suite facilities including a flushing toilet, vanity basin, and showers, the tent interiors are designed to evoke the very best of an era long-gone but certainly not forgotten. One tent is a family tent that consists of two en-suite bedrooms with a shared veranda (75m2).
A dining tent hosts the camp’s guests for lunch and dinner. From here a walkway leads to the lounge / bar area, the highest point of the lodge. You could not imagine a better place for breakfast or an evening drink, as the view is truly breathtaking.
Location
Pioneer Camp is situated close to the Moru Kopjes in the Serengeti's southwest. Kopjes are isolated stony outcrops that appear to spring up like islands from a sea of grass. The rock that constitutes these kopjes is slowly rounded off over thousands of years, leaving behind a truly breathtaking landscape.
Although Seronera is only a 40-minute drive away, the camp is far enough from central Serengeti with all its hustle and bustle to allow visitors to enjoy a very relaxed and personal safari.
Wildlife
The concentration of wildlife around the camp is excellent all year round and chances to see all the big cats is very good.
During May/June and in November, the area around Pioneer Camp is ideal for viewing the Great Migration and is also one of the few regions where rhino can be found.
The kopjes are popular with leopard and lion. These rock formations also provide shelter for a myriad of small creatures, including lizards, hyrax and a variety of insects, all of which reside in the kopje's many nooks and crannies.
Activities
The camp offers game drives. A balloon trip over the Serengeti can be arranged.

Permanent Camps
Permanent camps do not change location and therefore have a better infrastructure than mobile camps.
Mobile Camps
Mobile camps operate in the Serengeti and change their location two or three times a year following the Great Migration of the wildebeest and zebra. Mobile camps have a simpler, bush-like character. Although the rooms have an en-suite bathroom, there is often no running water in the rooms. Bathrooms are then equipped with a so-called bucket shower that needs to be filled with hot water by the camp team on demand.
