Sanctuary Ngorongoro
Ngorongoro Crater
Accommodation
Situated on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater, Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp consists of ten guest tents - each with its own en-suite bathroom and indoor bucket shower (with personal tent attendant filling your bucket shower to the perfect temperature whenever required from the outside). The room tents also feature hairdryers and plug points and a small sitting area in front of each of the tents where early morning coffee can be enjoyed before starting the day.
The three large and comfortable communal tents provide a dining area, a lounge area with a small library and bar, and a spacious terrace where guests can dine outside when the weather is suitable. In addition, you can retire with a book on the sofa corners scattered around the lawn (if you find time between safaris).
Location
Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp is located on the crater rim on the quieter Lemala access route. Via this route game drives on the crater floor start as early as 15 minutes after departure from the camp, often quite a bit earlier than any other camp‘s visitors. Ngorongoro Crater is the largest non-flooded crater basin (caldera) in the world with a diameter of 19 kilometers and walls 600 meters high. The crater floor covers about 260 square kilometers and acts like a natural zoo, providing food for a high resident animal population.
Wildlife
The mineral-rich crater floor is covered with nutritious grass and attracts large herds of animals. Up to 25‘000 mammals, predominantly herbivores reside in the Ngorongoro crater at any one time. The list includes wildebeest, eland, hartebeest, zebra, gazelle, buffalo, rhinos and warthog. Moors and forests provide food for hippo, elephant, baboon, waterbuck and bushbuck. Big cat such as lion, cheetah, leopard and serval find rich pickings here. Large packs of hyena also roam the crater, hunting or pinching the prey of other predators.
Activities
Game drives in the early morning and late afternoon in the Ngorongoro crater and on the rim. Guests can also enjoy cultural activities in a nearby Masai village.
