The Manor
Ngorongoro - Karatu
Accommodation
The Manor is a former Dutch farmhouse turned elegant lodge. Its twenty suites are housed in cottages spread across the supremely beautiful garden. Each cottage comprises two suites, each with an open fireplace, private terrace and forecourt. The lounge, reception and restaurant are located in an old farmhouse. Additional facilities include a small cinema, wine cellar, billiard room, library and spa.
Location
The Manor is situated in the Ngorongoro Highlands on the ca. 600 m2 Shangri-La estate, just outside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It offers the ideal base from which to discover the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara National Park - or simply enjoy a day of rest. A visit to the farming region / coffee plantation is highly recommended.
Wildlife
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera with 19km in diameter and walls 600m high. Its floor covers 260 square kilometres and acts like a natural zoo, providing food for a high resident animal population.
The mineral-rich crater floor is covered with nutritious grass and attracts large herds of animals. Up to 25'000 mammals, primarily herbivores can be found at any one time in the Ngorongoro Crater. The list includes wildebeest, eland, hartebeest, zebra, gazelle, buffalo, rhinos and warthog. Moors and forests provide food for hippo, elephant, baboon, waterbuck and bushbuck. Big cat such as lion, cheetah, leopard and serval find rich pickings here. Large packs of hyena also roam the crater, hunting or pinching the prey of other predators.
Activities
The Manor's main activity consists of game drives to the Ngorongoro Crater. More active guests may wish to grab a bicycle or horse in order discover the estate and coffee plantation - followed perhaps by a massage or visit to the spa?
