Just ten minutes’ flight from Zanzibar
With four million inhabitants, Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s most populous city. It was established at the end of the 19th century by the then Sultan of Zanzibar, Sayyid Majid, and later expanded under the German colonialists, who used it as their administrative headquarters. The population comprises members of various East African ethnicities, and has both Arabic and Asian influences.Dar es Salaam is the administrative and economic centre of Tanzania. It is home to numerous banks and insurance companies, as well as small to medium-sized businesses operating mainly in the textile, brewing and tobacco sectors. The city profits from its favourable geographic location directly on the Indian Ocean. The port is East Africa’s largest and acts as a hub for goods of all kinds.
Dar es Salaam is important to most visitors because it is just ten minutes by air from Zanzibar, so many people fly home via Dar es Salaam after a beach holiday.
