Buhoma Lodge
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Accommodation
Buhoma Lodge offers eight comfortable wooden chalets with en-suite bathrooms, some of which also provide bathtubs. A few rooms are elevated on the hillside and guests have to climb steep stairs to reach them. On the private balconies, guests can enjoy a cup of coffee and the beautiful view of the foliage of Bwindi Forest. Guests who are not good with climbing stairs need to book a room that is lower down.

The main building has two floors; restaurant, lounge and bar are located on the upper floor.

Location
Buhoma Lodge is located on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the northern part of the National Park, in the so-called Buhoma sector. The lodge neighbours Sanctuary Gorilla Lodge, an ideal location for mountain gorilla trekking and bird watching within the National Park.

Travel time to Buhoma Lodge from Entebbe is around nine hours. Flights from Entebbe to Kihihi Airstrip take about one hour and from there it is only a one-hour drive to the lodge.

Wildlife
The dense vegetation of Bwindi National Park is difficult to access and provides the perfect retreat for some 400 mountain gorillas. In addition to the endangered mountain gorillas, seven other primate species live here, including chimpanzees and the rare and beautiful L'Hoest monkeys. In total, Bwindi offers shelter to additional 80 mammals, some of which are very rare, such as forest elephants, bushbok, wild hog or the shy golden cat. Together with more than 560 bird species Bwindi is clearly a biologically highly varied region.

Four different gorilla groups can be visited in the Buhoma sector. They are called Rushegura, Habinyanja, Katwe and Mubare. Buhoma Lodge is only a five-minute WALK away from the rangers headquarter where most treks to the gorillas start. The track first leads down to the river and then up the mountain on the other side.

Activities
Gorilla trekking, guided forest walks, visit to surrounding villages and the Batwa pygmies, bird watching.

Gorilla trekking starts in the morning and can take as little as two hours or as much as six hours, depending on where the gorillas are. Only 8 guests are allowed per gorilla group and the maximum time spent with the gorillas is strictly 1 hour. The walk may include trekking through dense forest, sometimes including steeper climbs and guests need a bit of endurance and good footgear but will be rewarded with a life changing experience. Minimum age for Gorilla Trekking is 15 years.

Good to know
Sometimes the gorilla families visit the camp - with a little luck it is possible to meet the gorillas without having to leave the camp.
