Honey Bear Bush Camp
Queen Elizabeth National Park

Accommodation
Inspired by the 1953 movie "Mogambo", the name Honey Bear is derived from Ava Gardner's gutsy character, Eloise "Honey Bear" Kelly. Honey Bear Bush Camp has 5 charmingly furnished, classic safari tents with en-suite bathrooms and outdoor bucket showers. The tents are on the ground and have a small covered sitting area overlooking the Kazinga River and the Rwenzori Mountains.

Fall asleep to the grunts of hippos and wake up to herds of elephants coming down to the river to have their daily drink. Guests eat together in the airy mess tent and there is also a small lounge with WiFi access. An authentic, classic safari experience is guaranteed, as the Honey Bear is the only safari camp in the entire reserve.

Location
Honey Bear Bush Camp is situated on the south bank of the Kazinga Channel in Kyambura Game Reserve, which is part of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The Kyambura Wildlife Reserve (KWR) lies immediately south of Lake George (a Ramsar Site), and east of Queen Elizabeth National Park (QENP). It is about 8 km from Katunguru Village and 3 km from the Kyambura Gorge. The Kazinga Channel connects Lake Edward and Lake George, named after Queen Victoria's son, Edward VII and his successor, George V.

The closest airstrips are Mweya and Kasese, both about a 1 hour drive from Kasenyi Jetty, from where guests are taken to camp by boat. There is also the option of guests being picked up from Mweya airstrip, straight to the property.

Wildlife
The Kazinga Channel is said to have one of the highest concentrations of hippos in Africa. The two bays near the camp are home to an extra large number of hippos. Elephants, crocodiles and buffalo are also very common here. Especially in the dry season (December - March and June - September), elephants come to the channel in large herds to drink. On the game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, you may also be lucky enough to encounter leopard or lion. The camp is also a gem for bird lovers: with two swamps nearby, pelicans, kingfishers, fish eagles, African jacanas and various owls can be observed.

The Kyambura Gorge, about 35km from the lodge, is home to the only primates in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The gorge is a maximum of 100m deep and the Kayambura River flows through it. The Chimpanzee trekking takes about 2-3 hours, but the chance of success is not as high as in Kibale Forest.

Activities
Guided walks in the reserve, game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, boat trips on the Kazinga channel, chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge. Honey Bear is the only camp in the reserve to offer exclusive night drives.
