Hand built by the Volcanoes Construction team, Kibale Lodge will bring out the characteristics of the special 150-acre site dominated by a rocky outcrop with stunning views of the Rwenzori Mountains (Mountains of the Moon) from the main ridge line looking towards the west and the Queen Elizabeth plains and the Kazinga channel to the south. The area is surrounded by lush homesteads of the Kabarole region, with its welcoming temperate climate.
Location
Kibale National Park (795 km²) is home to 13 different primate species. Especially the chimpanzees are a magnet for many visitors to Uganda. About 1,500 chimpanzees live in Kibale Forest, as well as the largest population of colobus monkeys in East Africa.
Kibale Lodge is an hour’s drive from the historic hill town of Fort Portal and an hour from the Kasese airstrip, from which there are daily flights to and from Entebbe. Kibale Forest, the base for chimpanzee trekking, is a thirty-minute drive from the lodge.
Wildlife
The tropical forests of Kibale National Park is one of the best places to see primates in the wild. Chimpanzee trekking starts from Kanyanchu Visitor Center and lasts two to three hours, usually in a group of six guests. The minimum age is 12 years as visitors must strictly follow the instructions of the guide. Guests can usually get within a few meters of the primates and sighting success rate is very high, over 90%.
In addition to the primates, note the numerous birds and butterflies that hide in the undergrowth and on the trees that grow up to 55m high.
Activities
Besides the main attraction of chimpanzee trekking, guests can also visit the surrounding farms with their coffee and banana plantations.
