Kyaninga Lodge
Fort Portal
Accommodation
Kyaninga Lodge is the work of an English visionary who built this lodge within 6 years more or less on his own! It is located at Kyaninga Crater Lake, about 7km north of the town of Fort Portal. The construction is quite dramatic. Kyaninga was built on wooden stilts and long walkways connect the cottages to the multi-story main building that towers at the top. In front of the main building are sundecks and a swimming pool.
The eight cottages have very comfortable and large bedrooms with a little lounge, as well as a private bathroom with a freestanding bathtub and a separate shower. The rooms also offer a private terrace where you can enjoy breakfast tea and gaze at the impressive Rwenzori mountain range in the distance.
Location
Kibale National Park (795 kmĀ²) is home to 13 different primate species. Especially the chimpanzees are a magnet for many visitors to Uganda. About 1,500 chimpanzees live in Kibale Forest, as well as the largest population of colobus monkeys in East Africa.
Kyaninga Lodge overlooks Lake Kyaninga and is about an hour's drive from Kibale Forest and about two hours' drive from Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Activities
The lodge can be used as a home base for chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest. The tropical forests of Kibale National Park is one of the best places to see primates in the wild. Chimpanzee trekking starts from Kanyanchu Visitor Center and lasts two to three hours, usually in a group of six guests. The minimum age is 12 years as visitors must strictly follow the instructions of the guide. Guests can usually get within a few meters of the primates and sighting success rate is very high, over 90%.
In addition to the primates, note the numerous birds and butterflies that hide in the undergrowth and on the trees that grow up to 55m high.
Good to know
The lodge has a beautiful garden where local produce for the kitchen is grown. There is also a tennis court and probably the only croquet field in Uganda!
