The River Station
Queen Elizabeth National Park
Accommodation
The River Station is a peaceful and unique safari lodge, perched on the banks of the quietly flowing Kazinga Channel, the river that connects Lakes Edward and George. The River Station is a long-awaited game-changer for Queen Elizabeth far away from anyone else.
The river features prominently at the River Station: guests will arrive by boat, travel by river taxi to the vehicles for game drives, and enjoy sunset dhow cruises. Better yet, the river is the playground for dozens of elephants and even more hippo who come daily to the sandy shores just below the lodge.
Location
River Station is situated on the south bank of the Kazinga Channel in Kyambura Game Reserve, which is part of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The Kyambura Wildlife Reserve (KWR) lies immediately south of Lake George (a Ramsar Site), and east of Queen Elizabeth National Park (QENP). It is about 8 km from Katunguru Village and 3 km from the Kyambura Gorge. The Kazinga Channel connects Lake Edward and Lake George, named after Queen Victoria's son, Edward VII and his successor, George V. River Station sits next to it's sister property Honey Bear Bush Camp.
The closest airstrips are Mweya and Kasese, both about a 1 hour drive from Kasenyi Jetty, from where guests are taken to the lodge by boat. There is also the option of guests being picked up from Mweya airstrip, straight to the property.
Wildlife
The Kazinga Channel is said to have one of the highest concentrations of hippos in Africa. The two bays near the lodge are home to an extra large number of hippos. Elephants, crocodiles and buffalo are also very common here. Especially in the dry season (December - March and June - September), elephants come to the channel in large herds to drink. On the game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, you may also be lucky enough to encounter leopard or lion. River Station is also a gem for bird lovers: with two swamps nearby, pelicans, kingfishers, fish eagles, African jacanas and various owls can be observed.
The Kyambura Gorge, about 35km from the lodge, is home to the only primates in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The gorge is a maximum of 100m deep and the Kayambura River flows through it. The Chimpanzee trekking takes about 2-3 hours, but the chance of success is not as high as in Kibale Forest.
Activities
Guided walks in the reserve, game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, boat trips on the Kazinga channel, chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge. Honey Bear Bush Camp & River Station are the only accommodation in the reserve to offer exclusive night drives.
