Entebbe / Kampala
Udanda's former capital
International Airport
Starting point of most trips to Uganda
Large parts of Kampala were destroyed after the fall of the dictator Idi Amin in 1979 and in the subsequent civil war. However, the city has experienced a renaissance since the early 1990s. Today it is one of Africa's most modern cities and has a very European feel to it: lots of trees and parks, shops and hotels, bars and international restaurants. Kampala originated in the 19th century, when the Bugandan kings established themselves on the hills around the area. The name ‘Kampala’ is derived from Kasozi K'Empala, which means "hill of the antelopes" in the Luganda language.
Entebbe International Airport is the starting point for most visitors travelling to Uganda. The city is beautifully situated on a peninsula in Lake Victoria and is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land. The city is safe and as international flights usually arrive late, most travellers spend their first night in Uganda in Entebbe.
