Chamilandu Bush Camp
South Luangwa National Park
Accommodation
One of the southernmost bush camps, Chamilandu Bush Camp is often combined with one of the other Bushcamp Company camps, such as
Kuyenda,
Chindeni,
Zungulila,
Kapamba or
Bilimungwe.
With three rooms built on high stilts, Chamilandu Bush Camp is perched on the very edge of the Luangwa River. Both the bedrooms and bathrooms are open-fronted and built facing the tranquil waters. Made of wood and exuding comfort, the rooms are perfect for nocturnal stargazing or for watching the diurnal wallowing of hippo.
The main building with its lounge and dining table is somewhat simple in that it is built directly onto sand. The camp is harmonious and well situated, surrounded by beautiful plains stretching along the riverside and a wildlife-rich environment.
Location
Chamilandu Bush Camp is perched on the very edge of the Luangwa River in the southern part of South Luangwa National Park. Transfer time from Mfuwe Lodge during the dry season is 2 hrs 30 mins.
Accessed in 30 minutes from Mfuwe Airport, Mfuwe Lodge (main lodge, 24 rooms, mid-range accommodation) and various smaller, more rewarding bush camps located further south all belong to the Bushcamp Company.
Vehicle transfer usually includes a stop at Mfuwe Lodge, the Bushcamp Company's beating heart, where guests can recharge before continuing on to one of the smaller bush camps.
Wildlife
The southern part of South Luangwa Park is covered with mopane forests; game drives are focussed around the riverbed as its open plains are home to a denser concentration of wildlife. Elephant, buffalo, hyena, lion and leopard are often sighted; wild dog less often. The river and lagoons also support numerous crocodile, hippo and a large variety of birdlife.
Thornicroft's giraffe, Cookson's wildebeest and Crawshay's zebra are unique to South Luangwa National Park.
Activities
Activities are identical at all Bushcamp Company's camps and comprise game drives in open 4x4 vehicles and bushwalks with armed rangers. During the hot months, the walks are usually carried out in the mornings when temperatures are cooler. Walks can begin at camp or guests can be driven to a suitable starting point.
