Chisa Busanga Camp
Kafue National Park
Accommodation
Chisa Busanga, opened in 2021, features four tree houses in the from of bird nests. Chisa means ‘birds nest’ in the local language as the rooms were inspired by the weaver bird nests that decorate the trees. Sitting on a small tree-lined island, the camp uses only solar power as do the game drive vehicle used to explore the watery dambos beyond. Each room is accessed by stairs (nest #2 even has an elevator) and offers complete privacy with en-suite toilet, shower and bird's eye views of the vast Busanga plains.
The large main tent is open to the front and hosts the dining area and the lounge. Dinner is sometimes served in the traditional boma and breakfast usually at the fireplace in front of the main building, in true Zambian style. There is also a small swimming pool for guests to cool off in the hot summer months.
Location
Chisa Busanga is located on the Busanga Plains, in the Northern part of Kafue National Park. At 22’500 km², Kafue is one of the largest parks in Africa, a magnificent and relatively little-visited wilderness. The main highlight of Kafue are the Busanga Plains, a glorious wetland area to the North which remains blissfully undisturbed. During green season (Nov-May) the area becomes inaccessible, only by June the waters have usually receded sufficiently for the camps to open. As the dry season progresses and the waterholes dry out, an increasing density of wildlife is lured into the remaining waterholes on the Busanga Plains.
The camp is usually accessed by light aircraft into the nearby Busanga airstrip (1h 30min flight from Lusaka - approx. 20min transfer to camp).
Wildlife
The Busanga Plains offer a broad spectrum of wildlife, but none of them in large numbers. Nevertheless, a visit is still highly recommended – where else can one encounter Wattled Cranes, Crowned Cranes, sitatunga, puku, red lechwe, wildebeest, sable and roan antelope, leopard and lion all on the same day?
Cheetah and wild dog may also be encountered and small groups of elephant can be seen roaming the plains. With 491 different species recorded to date, the Busanga Plains is a veritable paradise for bird lovers - especially from April to June.
Activities
Chisa offers game drives and guided walking safaris. Chisa owns two electric safari vehicles (eCruisers) - thus it is possible to drive almost silently through the African bush without the noise of a diesel engine. Some of the animals still have to get used to the new vehicles, but are clearly less nervous due to the lack of noise.
Good to know
Operational months are June to November. Children under 14 years are only allowed if the camp is booked on a private basis. There is reliably good Wifi connection in the main building, but not in the rooms.
