Kafunta River Lodge
South Luangwa National Park
Accommodation
The eight private safari chalets at Kafunta River Lodge have been built on raised wooden platforms and have thatched roofs. Additionally, there are two luxury suites which feature a private deck, an upstairs viewing veranda and a luxurious bathroom. The rooms overlook a game rich flood plain with the Luangwa River in the background. In the dry season elephants and plains game can easily be watched from the comfort of your room.
Central to the lodge is the spacious lounge and dining area and the open fireplace. Kafunta River Lodge’s spacious wooden deck provides guests with undisturbed views over the plain and is of the perfect place for a sumptuous dinner under the stars. Next to the bar is the infinity pool and the only natural hot tub in the Luangwa Valley (37°C)! During the cooler nights from May to July you may want to give it a try. Located under the main deck, a photographic hide has been built, a great place to relax during the day and watch the game at the lodge and waterhole.
Location
Kafunta River Lodge is situated approximately 1 hour from Mfuwe Airport. The road turns left just before the main bridge to South Luangwa National Park and leads south along the river. The camp is located right on the edge of the river.
Wildlife
Lion, leopard and hyena are relatively easy to find, wild dog less so. The Luangwa River flows right past the front door and plays host to crocodile and hippo. This region is also home to elephant, buffalo, zebra, kudu, impala, puku and a large variety of birdlife, in particular large colonies of bea-eater from September to October.
Activities
The camp offers game drives in an open 4x4 vehicle, walks with armed rangers, visit of a local community.
The park is usually accessed via the Mfuwe main bridge or via a pontoon that is pulled over the river by two strong men. At low water levels the game drive vehicles cross the river directly.
The spa offers welcome relaxation after your safari.
