Kulandila Camp
South Luangwa National Park
Accommodation
Kulandila Camp is located far in the southern part of South Luangwa National Park, about 6km upstream from Sungani Lodge. Sungani Lodge and Kulandila Camp are family run and the owners have a strong focus on conservation and have committed themselves to preserve and protect this remote corner of South Luangwa National Park. Accordingly, Sungani means custodian or keeper in the local Chichewa language.
Kulandila is situated on the magnificent banks of the Luangwa River and is the smaller of the two properties. Four traditional safari style tents are built on wooden platforms and offer approximately 43m² of indoor floor space, en-suite bathroom, a private verandah, outdoor bath with a view, tea & coffee making facilities and ceiling fan. Each tent is made up of single beds, which are combined to form a king configuration and can easily be separated to form twin beds.
The open-plan main area faces the Luangwa River. The style remains contemporary and features large leather chairs, colonial style furniture and brass finishes. There is even an adjoining swimming pool and viewing decks with vast vistas of the Luangwa.
Location
The Luangwa river begins its 770km life in Lilonda and the Mafinga hills, North East Zambia, forming one of the major tributaries of the mighty Zambezi river. Its elevation decreases and therefore it becomes a meandering ever changing river, with an expanse of oxbow lakes (known as Luangwa Wafwa’s) and many historical flood plains. This in turn creates a stunning array of different habitats owing to the valley’s dense wildlife populations. The valley floor itself covers an impressive 52,000 square kilometres or 20,000 square miles, of which the South Luangwa National Park covers about 9,050 square kilometres of exquisite, wild, and untouched wilderness.
As the Luangwa flows further south through the National park past Mfuwe and down to the southern reaches of the park it passes an area called the Lusangazi sector, which is the exclusive paradise that is Sungani Lodge and Kulandila Camp. Due to the very remote location, guests will fly from Mfuwe Airport to the Sungani airstrip in the Sungani Cessna 206 (4pax) - this is approximately a 20-minute flight. From the airstrip to camp is only a 5-min drive. If preferred, collection can be done by road which will take around 3 hours. Sungani is roughly 70 kilometres from Mfuwe Town.
Wildlife
The Luangwa valley is known as the “valley of the leopard” for its dense leopard population. It boasts the largest hippo population on earth as well as a plethora of other wildlife including, lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo.
Thornicroft's giraffe, Cookson's wildebeest and Crawshay's zebra are unique to South Luangwa National Park.
Activities
Activities comprise game drives in open 4x4 vehicles and bushwalks with armed rangers. There is a viewing deck/platform at the end of Sungani Lagoon and a sunken hide at a waterhole by the river which service both properties. A mobile carmine hide will be erected depending on where the carmine bee-eaters nest.
