Accommodation
Luambe Camp lies in the remote Luambe National Park, where it is the only accommodation option. The rather rustic camp consists of only four tented rooms, which come with indoor bathrooms. Luambe is centred on a simple open sided dining and lounging area, leading out to a open campfire.

Location
Luambe Camp lies in the eponymous Luambe National Park, a relatively small park at 300 square kilometres, located in between North and South Luangwa. The park comprises largely of mopane woodland savanna with patches of open grassland plains.

Road transfer from Mfuwe Airport will be approximately 4 hours depending on road conditions. The route leads along the east side of Luangwe River, heading north through the Nsefu Sector and Chikwinda Gate.

Wildlife
It’s no surprise the Luangwa River is the center of life here. Its numerous lagoons are visited by a wide range of animals and birds. The camp is adjacent to one of the largest hippo pools in the Luangwa valley, which gets super busy in the dry season. Their endless grunting is a constant background sound of the place. The grassland of the Chipuka Plains are favored by buffalo, elephant, impala, puku, kudu, Crawshay’s zebra and Thornicroft’s giraffe. In other areas it is possible to spot eland, willd dog, leopard, spotted hyena and lion.

Up to 1999 Luambe National Park was drastically unfunded and unfortunately excessive poaching led to a significant decline in wildlife. A non-profit association has since intervened and Luangwa Wilderness has taken over the management of the park, working closely with the local communities. Together with the arrival of tourism into the reserve, wildlife numbers recovered well and improved. In the future there are hopes that Luambe can play a critical role in the formation of a wildlife corridor between North and South Luangwa.

Activities
Luambe is offering a good range of well-guided safari activities, which are all centred on vehicle safari, guided (bird) walks and night game drives. Vehicles at Luambe are completely free from canopies, which is great for viewing and taking photos, but does naturally expose you to the elements more, bring sun hats and sunscreen. For a few weeks, usually mid July to mid August, the local carmine bee-eater colony can be observed. The activity is called 'Carmine Coffee', where guests get up very early in the morning and prepare to watch the first birds fly out while biscuits and coffee are served.

Good to know
There is no WiFi or other internet connectivity at this camp and unlikely to be any phone reception.
