Ntemwa Busanga Camp
Kafue National Park
Accommodation
Ntemwa is a small, simple and very private seasonal bush camp situated on the edge of the Busanga Plains. Owned and operated by two young and enthusiastic lads, Phil Jeffery and and Tyrone McKeith, who act like as hosts and head guides. They are also very much involved in the conservation of the area, especially the anti-poaching operations. The five guest tents are quite simple with a double bed or twin beds and an open-air bathroom in the back of the tent. The bathroom is en-suite, open-air and with flush toilets and a bush shower, which is supplied with hot water on request. In front of the tent there is room for a small veranda with chairs.
The main area comprises an elevated platform around a large sycamore fig tree, with lounge and dining areas. A staircase leads down to the fireplace and an open lounge tent. This camp tends to appeal most to more experienced safari travelers, who specifically seek out this kind of more authentic experience.
Location
Ntemwa is located in on the edge the Busanga Plains, in the Northern part of Kafue National Park. At 22’500 km², Kafue is one of the largest parks in Africa, a magnificent and relatively little-visited wilderness. The main highlight of Kafue are the Busanga Plains, a glorious wetland area to the North which remains blissfully undisturbed. During green season (Nov-May) the area becomes inaccessible, only by June the waters have usually receded sufficiently for the camps to open. As the dry season progresses and the waterholes dry out, an increasing density of wildlife is lured into the remaining waterholes on the Busanga Plains.
The camp is usually accessed by light aircraft into the nearby Busanga airstrip (1h 30min flight from Lusaka - approx. 30min transfer to camp). If combined with sister camp Musekese it is a three hour game drive transfer to Ntemwa.
Wildlife
The Busanga Plains offer a broad spectrum of wildlife, but none of them in large numbers. Nevertheless, a visit is still highly recommended – where else can one encounter Wattled Cranes, Crowned Cranes, sitatunga, puku, red lechwe, wildebeest, sable and roan antelope, leopard and lion all on the same day?
Cheetah and wild dog may also be encountered and small groups of elephant can be seen roaming the plains. With 491 different species recorded to date, the Busanga Plains is a veritable paradise for bird lovers - especially from April to June.
Activities
Game drives in open vehicles (day and night), full day drives to reach some of the iconic spots on Busanga, walking safaris.
Good to know
Operational months are July to end of October. No Wi-Fi or cellphone reception. Children under 14 years are only allowed if the camp is booked on a private basis.
