Sausage Tree Camp
Lower Zambezi National Park
Accommodation
Upon arrival, Sausage Tree Camp impresses with its elegance and attentive staff. Seven modern and very spacious suites and one family suite (Kigelia House) are situated in a prime location on the banks of the Zambezi and offer a fabulously beautiful view. Each suite has its own lounge area, a very large bathroom with indoor and outdoor shower, as well as a bathtub and an equally spacious terrace with private plunge pool where you can cool off and watch the hippos, crocodiles and elephants. Each suite is assigned a personal butler to ensure that the guests have everything they need.
In the middle lies the main building, where bar, dining area and the jetty are located. From the high deck the view of the green islands of the Zambezi and the Escarpment in the background is particularly idyllic. Breakfast is served at the bar in front of the deck. A 25 metre pool gives variety to safari life, where you can cool off and swim a few lengths.
Sausage Tree is one of the most luxurious safari camps in Lower Zambezi, offering guests any amenities without losing its original bush camp vibe. The individual, personal service is key; in addition to a personal butler each party has a private guide at their disposal. Sausage Tree Camp offers personalized safaris allowing the guests to set pace of their day including the type and length of each activity.
Location
Sausage Tree Camp is situated within the Lower Zambezi National Park, which stretches 120 km along the Zambezi River and sits in the southeast of Zambia (4092 km²) opposite the Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe. The camp is accessed by air from Lusaka (45 mins) to Jeki Airstrip. A 40-minute boat transfer takes guests from Jeki to the camp.
The region around the camp is highly diverse and contains several beautiful channels and lagoons.
Wildlife
The Zambezi is very wide at this point and the reed and grass-covered islands right in front of the camp attract hippo, elephant, buffalo and crocodile. Game drives offer guests the opportunity to spot lion and leopard; zebra, kudu, impala and waterbuck are ubiquitous. The escarpment leading to the country's interior acts as a natural barrier, keeping the animals close to the river.
Elephants often visit the camp, roaming freely in search of fallen husks and fruits from surrounding trees (most particularly Winter Thorn aka Ana Tree fruit from August to October).
Giraffe are not present in the park and wild dog and cheetah are very rare.
Activities
The camp offers game drives in an open 4x4 vehicle, boat trips on the Zambezi, fishing (catch & release), canoe trips and walks. Canoe trips are something of a highlight and take place along an enchanting Zambezi side channel where guests get to see hippo, crocodile, elephant, baboon and maybe even a lion or two.
Sausage Tree Camp is equally flexible as Chiawa Camp and activities are planned around guests' requirements. Lunch and dinner are offered in the spirit of variety as a bush barbecue or in the shallow water of the Zambezi!
