Shawa Luangwa Camp
South Luangwa National Park
Accommodation
Shawa Luangwa Camp by Green Safaris is located on the banks of the Luangwa River at a site chosen by Jacob Shawa, one of Zambia‘s most famous safari guides. It is hardly surprising that the camp was named after the legendary Zambian safari guide.
The camp has three double tents and one family tent, all of which are on raised platforms and have a very characteristic pyramid-like shape. The sides of each of the tents can be opened during the day giving view of the surrounding trees. Each of the rooms has its own en-suite bathroom, a sunken bathtub and a wooden deck overlooking the Luangwa River.
The spacious Shawa Family Tent consists of two tents that are connected to each other. One of the rooms has a double bed, the other two single beds. Due to the fact that the tents are raised on high platforms, this camp is not suitable for smaller children.
The central main building with restaurant and lounge is hidden in the trees. A path leads down to a meadow by the river, where the pool area and a fireplace are located.
Location
Shawa Luangwa Camp is located in the Lupanda Game Management Area on the east bank of the Luangwa River, about 45 minutes drive from Mfuwe Airport.
From the camp, guests can cross the river by pontoon or boat and reach the national park in a few minutes. The Nsefu sector of the national park is located a bit further north and is another attractive option for game drives.
Wildlife
Lots of lions! Leopard and hyena are quite abundant too, and the odd wild dog may also be encountered. Luangwa River is on the doorstep and supports crocodile and hippo. Furthermore, the National Park is also home to a large number of elephant, buffalo, zebra, kudu, impala, puku and a large variety of birdlife.
Thornicroft's giraffe, Cookson's wildebeest and Crawshay's zebra are unique to South Luangwa National Park.
Activities
Shawa offers game drives and guided walking safaris. Green Safaris is conducting «Silent Safaris» in electric vehicles (eCruisers) - thus it is possible to drive almost silently through the African bush without the noise of a diesel engine.
