The Island Pongwe
Zanzibar Island
Accommodation
Island Pongwe is, as the name already reveals, an island. The resort with only five rooms, a pool and a restaurant was built on a coral pedestal about 100m from Pongwe Bay. At high tide the island is completely surrounded by water; at low tide the water recedes and those who wish can take a trip to the mud flats right off the island in their rubber shoes, as the locals also do in search of seafood.
There's a choice of four standard rooms (35m2) with en-suite bathrooms, rain showers, king-size beds and a verandah with private beach loungers. Two of these rooms look out onto the mainland (Bay View Rooms), while the other two have ocean views (Ocean View Rooms). The larger Sultan Suite is located at the rear of the pool and offers more space (70m2) as well as a bigger verandah to relax and great view of the open sea. The rooms do not have air conditioning, because the lodge is based on ecological principles and thanks to the constant breeze and the many shady trees aircon isn’t necessary even in the hottest season. All rooms provide a safe, minibar and tea/coffee station.
The restaurant on the island is known for its culinary treats and is open to the public. At lunch and dinner time Pongwe Island is often well-frequented. However, access is only granted from 10am and by 10pm all visitors must leave the island. Needless to say, hotel guests of Island Pongwe can reserve their favorite table and have priority.
Location
Island Pongwe is located on the east coast of Zanzibar near the village of Pongwe. The distance to Stone Town is 34km or about an hour drive on paved roads. At low tide you can walk to the island, at high tide the short distance is covered by boat.
Activities
All excursions possible on Zanzibar can be organized by the reception/management of Pongwe Island.
