Changa Safari Camp
Lake Kariba, Matusadona National Park

Accommodation
Bumi Hills Safari Lodge, perched on a hill overlooking Lake Kariba and the game-rich shoreline, boasts one of Africa’s most spectacular vistas. On its own private safari concession, Bumi Hills Safari Lodge sits on the border to Matusadona National Park.

At its heart is the large viewing deck, which extends over various levels, and the elegant infinity pool. The lodge is stylishly furnished and features many lounge corners, a dining area and the bar and outside sitting areas. A billiard room, a spa and a fully equipped gym complete the offer. Guests enjoy meeting at the open fireplace to share the day's experiences.

The Lodge houses 10 spacious Lake View Suites, each complete with air-conditioning, a freestanding bath, an indoor and outdoor shower, a mini bar, and a private viewing deck extending out towards Lake Kariba. In addition, the private Baobab Villa is the perfect family retreat or friends’ getaway – featuring two large suites, a living room, and an outdoor and indoor dining area. The Villa also comes with the personalized services of a butler, a guide, and the exclusive use of a safari vehicle.

Location
Matusadona National Park consists of about 338,000 acres of unspoiled and unfenced wilderness. Rugged mountains, springs and streams, Miomba woodlands and Mopane scrublands, pristine riverine vegetation, crystal clear lake water and grass flanked shoreline all combine to create a unique habitat for animals.

Access to Bumi Hills is by plane into Bumi Hill airstip from where it is only a 5-minute transfer to the lodge. The duration of the flights is approximately an hour and a half from either Harare or Victoria Falls.

Wildlife
Elephants frequent the shoreline as do numerous species of antelope. Although not plentiful in numbers, some predators, including lion, leopard, hyena and cheetah can be found. A few very endangered black rhino are present as well. Hippos and crocodiles are abundant. The birdlife is prolific with in excess of 350 species having been identified in the park.

Activities
Game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, walking safaris. Motor boats are used for excursions on Lake Kariba. Ask for fishing rods if you want to try your luck with tiger fish (catch & release). Lady Jacqueline is a large yacht that can be booked for excursions on the lake. There is a choice of a half-day trip including a delicious lunch, or guests stay overnight on the boat as part of a longer trip. Lady Jacqueline can comfortably accommodate up to eight guests (4 adults, 4 children, minimum age 12 years, booking required). Cultural excursions to a nearby village are also possible.

Activities are carried out in the Bumi Hills Conservancy, not within the Matusadona National Park.

Good to know
In 1954, a decision was made to dam the Zambezi River at Kariba Gorge. It was to create an expanse of water 223km long and 40km wide, making it by far the largest man-made lake in the world. The village 'Kariba' at the eastern end of the dam was created during the many years of construction.

Operation Noah, an historic animal rescue exercise launched soon after the completion of the dam wall and resultant flooding, took five years and rescured some 6'000 animals which were relocated to Matusadona National Park. The operation was led by Rupert Fothergill.
