Ole Sereni Nairobi Kenya
1 night

Accommodation Ole Sereni is ideally located for an uncomplicated overnight stay in Nairobi. Its location opposite Nairobi National Park means it is not unusual for guests to spot a rhino or the odd gazelle while enjoying dinner.

The sympathetically furnished rooms could be better soundproofed. However, the hotel has a good outdoor restaurant where guests can sit comfortably in the evening. It also boasts an outdoor pool with bar, a large indoor restaurant and a rooftop bar.

Location The Ole Sereni is akin to an airport hotel and sits between Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the local airport Nairobi Wilson. If you are looking for a place to stay to avoid the traffic of Nairobi, then the Ole Sereni is a good choice.

The drive from the Ole Sereni to both airports is about 30 minutes.

Nairobi
Nairobi
Nairobi is the capital and the largest city of Kenya. It has an elevation of 1,795 metres above sea level, a pleasant climate, horrible traffic and is the starting point of all fly-in safaris to Kenya's safari parks.

Nairobi was created in 1896 as deopot for the construction of the railroad line that would connect Uganda with the port of Mombasa. The place quickly developed into a respectable city. Today Nairobi has a population of about 5 million people. Unfortunately, the infrastructure has not really kept up with the pace, the roads are poorly maintained and chronically congested. The Karen district in the south of Nairobi is named after the Danish writer Karen Blixen. Many of the accommodations we book are located here. The location is ideal, as both the international airport and the local airport Wilson are relatively easy and quick to reach. Those who spend more time in Nairobi or have to wait can visit the Karen Blixen Museum, the work of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust with the Elephant Orphanage near Nairobi National Park, or the Giraffe Center

Tortilis Camp Amboseli National Park Kenya
3 nights

Accommodation Tortilis Camp is named after the flat-topped umbrella thorn tree, the Acacia Tortilis, which surrounds the camp, With Mount Kilimanjaro peering down over the entire camp, each of Tortilis’ guest tents has a glorious view of the mountain. The 16 tents are all spacious, with king or twin beds, elegant en-suite bathrooms and spacious verandahs.

There is a main lounge, bar and dining area, all exquisitely built with natural materials and thatched roofs. Within the lush gardens, the swimming-pool is shaded by palms and acacia Tortilis, a haven for tropical birds. The pool has bar service and board games.

The Private House and Family Tent are located slightly separate to the main camp, upon the hill where they share a pool and enjoy magnificent views of Kilimanjaro.

Location Tortilis Camp is located in the private conservancy Kitirua bordering Amboseli on the western edge of the National Park.

Amboseli became a wildlife sanctuary in the 1940s and was declared a national park in 1974. Amboseli can be very dry and dusty, but the permanent swamps and lakes sustain big numbers of elephants and plains game. It is probably here, at Amboseli National Park, where you encounter Africa's largest and most beautiful big-tusked elephants. Largely untouched by poaching, the park supports about 1500 of these great animals. A photo of an elephant with snow-capped Kilimanjaro in the background is the number-one subject for most vistors and worth the entire trip.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, rises more than 5000m above the Amboseli plains. The swamps in Amboseli are fed by rain and meltwater from the peaks of Kilimanjaro.

Amboseli NP
Amboseli National Park is located in the south of Kenya and forms a larger ecosystem with the Chyulu Hills, Tsavo National Park and the wildlife areas in bordering Tanzania. The park is known for the large number of elephants and the good view of the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro.

The swamps are also a magnet for buffalo and hippo. Lions, hyenas, wild cats and jackals are quite easy to find, leopards and cheetahs are a bit more difficult. Giraffes, zebras, gnus, gazelles and antelopes are also present in large numbers. Rhinos also live in the park. After the rains the park attracts many water birds, counting up to 400 species.

Laikipia Plateau
Laikipia is a highland plateau (1700 - 2000m) in the center of Kenya, which extends from the slopes of snow-covered Mount Kenya to the deserts in the north of the country. The altitude of about 1800 meters above sea level and the proximity to the equator bring balanced temperatures with cool nights and pleasant warm daytime temperatures. The geology is as diverse as the animal world: forested valleys, river basins and open grass savannahs.

The area used to be a patchwork of huge ranches, and has now become a huge conservation story by turning the ranches into conservation areas where wildlife is only second to the Maasai Mara.

Half of the Kenya's black rhinos and half of the world’s Grevy’s zebras live here. Wild dogs were resettled and there are good chances to see one of the packs on safari. About 2'000 elephants live in the area and migrate between Mount Kenya and the Samburu area.

Income from the safari industry is used to support the local Samburu and Maasai communities.

Location There are scheduled 1.5hr flights from Nairobi Wilson airport into Samburu National Reserve (Oyrx Airstrip) followed by a road transfer to Sasaab (approximately one hour). Guests can also arrive by private charter to Sasaab’s airstrip, just a short drive from the lodge.

Sasaab is closely involved with several local schools, the Westgate Community Conservancy and the Grevy’s Zebra Trust.

Samburu
Samburu
Samburu National Reserve is situated at the southeastern corner of Samburu District in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. It is the home of the proud Samburu who have lived here for generations. It is bordered to the south by Ewaso Nyiro River, which separates it from the Buffalo Springs National Reserve.

Ewaso Nyiro river draws wildlife in great numbers and creates a green oasis in an otherwise parched land. It’s a place of rich natural diversity with an astounding number of animals from huge majestic elephant to lion, leopard and cheetah and the «Samburu Special Five»: the Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Gerenuk antelope and Somali ostrich. Wild dogs are also regularly seen.

Your onward journey
By PlaneFlight to Mara Expedition Camp

Mara Expedition Camp Maasai Mara, Mara Triangle Kenya
3 nights

Accommodation Mara Expedition Camp is positioned in a grove of typical East African acacia trees overlooking a valley in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. The camp tells the story of early day explorers with touches of campaign furniture and open air space under light canvas. It is an ideal camp, from which to start your safari looking for big cats such as cheetah and lion.

The six rooms are large canvas tents built on wooden platforms, with en-suite bathrooms and outside deck. Three rooms each stand on either side of the dining/lounge tent, where in the evening the friendly staff entertain their guests by the light of kerosene lamps.

Location Most guests fly in a small aircraft from Nairobi Wilson to the Ol Kiombo Airstrip. The drive from here to the camp then takes about 45 minutes. The flight time from Nairobi Wilson is about 45 minutes.

The Maasai Mara abuts the Serengeti to the north to form the border with Tanzania. The reserve covers an area of approx. 1'510 km² and receives water via the Sand River, the Talek River and, of course, the Mara River. The Mara Expedition Camp is located just a few short kilometres or five minutes’ drive from Mara Plains Camp, and sits within the Maasai Mara Game Reserve on a bend of the Ntiakitiak River.

Maasai Mara
Due to the high concentration of big cats and the recurring “Great Migration”, the seasonal migration of the herds of animals, this protected area is the crown jewel of Kenya. Between July and October/November, over a million wildebeest and around 200,000 zebra spend time in the Maasai Mara before returning south to Tanzania's Serengeti. This ancient drive is so strong that the animals can't be stopped by arid land, gorges or the crocodiles lurking in the rivers. Even if you don't always witness the migration directly, the Maasai Mara has a very large and diverse animal population and you will be right in the middle of it.
