Hemingways Nairobi Kenya
1 night

Accommodation Hemingways in Nairobi is a 5-star establishment with 45 suites, each with a balcony facing the Ngong Hills, which are situated approximately 25 km southwest of Nairobi. Surrounded by a stunning garden, the hotel boasts a large swimming pool and offers many amenities, including a butler service, in-house restaurant, brasserie, bar, gym and spa.

The 80 m2 Deluxe Suites are located on the ground floor of the accommodation wing. The Executive Suites (80 m2), the Blixen Suites (160 m2) and the Hemmingway Suite (240 m2) occupy the upper floor .

Location Hemingways is located between Nairobi National Park and the Ngong Hills approximately 10 km outside of the city centre. The district is called Karen, most likely after Karen Blixen, the ‘Out of Africa’ author whose house is just a stone’s throw away from Hemingways.

The traffic in Nairobi can be horrific, which is why you should always calculate plenty of time to get to the Airport. The drive from Hemingways to the international airport is about 40 minutes; the drive to the local airport Nairobi Wilson is only 20 minutes.

Langatta Giraffe Sanctuary, Nairobi National Park and Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage are all close by.

Nairobi
Nairobi
Nairobi is the capital and the largest city of Kenya. It has an elevation of 1,795 metres above sea level, a pleasant climate, horrible traffic and is the starting point of all fly-in safaris to Kenya's safari parks.

Nairobi was created in 1896 as deopot for the construction of the railroad line that would connect Uganda with the port of Mombasa. The place quickly developed into a respectable city. Today Nairobi has a population of about 5 million people. Unfortunately, the infrastructure has not really kept up with the pace, the roads are poorly maintained and chronically congested. The Karen district in the south of Nairobi is named after the Danish writer Karen Blixen. Many of the accommodations we book are located here. The location is ideal, as both the international airport and the local airport Wilson are relatively easy and quick to reach. Those who spend more time in Nairobi or have to wait can visit the Karen Blixen Museum, the work of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust with the Elephant Orphanage near Nairobi National Park, or the Giraffe Center

Chyulu Hills
Tucked away between Tsavo West National Park and Amboseli National Park, the Chyulu Hills form an important wildlife corridor, especially for the elephants.

Pretty hills rise above the plains and provide great vantage points to see majastic Kilimanjaro in the far distance. It is one of the most beautiful areas we have ever seen in Africa. The highest hill reaches 2'188m. Since the landscape is of volcanic origin, you will also find some of the longest and deepest lava caves in the world. The Chyulu Hills are also home to large mammals such as elephant, leopard, giraffe, giant forest pig, buffalo and a variety of antelope.

Laikipia Plateau
Laikipia is a highland plateau (1700 - 2000m) in the center of Kenya, which extends from the slopes of snow-covered Mount Kenya to the deserts in the north of the country. The altitude of about 1800 meters above sea level and the proximity to the equator bring balanced temperatures with cool nights and pleasant warm daytime temperatures. The geology is as diverse as the animal world: forested valleys, river basins and open grass savannahs.

The area used to be a patchwork of huge ranches, and has now become a huge conservation story by turning the ranches into conservation areas where wildlife is only second to the Maasai Mara.

Half of the Kenya's black rhinos and half of the world’s Grevy’s zebras live here. Wild dogs were resettled and there are good chances to see one of the packs on safari. About 2'000 elephants live in the area and migrate between Mount Kenya and the Samburu area.

Income from the safari industry is used to support the local Samburu and Maasai communities.

Mara Plains Camp Maasai Mara, Olare Motorogi Conservancy Kenya
3 nights

Accommodation Mara Plains Camp is located on the 35,000-acre Olare Motorogi Conservancy, one of the northern conservancies that act as a buffer zone to the Mara reserve in southwestern Kenya. Mara Plains Camp is in an extraordinary location on the Ntiakatek River, a mere two kilometres from the Maasai Mara’s north-central border.

Mara Plains Camp is a small, high quality, five-roomed camp under canvas and on raised decks with sweeping views across Kenya’s notable savannahs. It is among the smallest and most personal camps in the Maasai Mara region. In addition to the five double rooms there is a 2-bedroom suite that is called the Jahazi Suite. It can accommodate a family of 5 with 2 adults and 3 children, or 4 adults traveling together and includes the use of a private vehicle.

The tents provide ample space with 65m2 and a private verandah of nearly the same size. The rooms feature a king-size bed, a desk, a dressing area, a small lounge and an en-suite bathroom with copper tub and indoor shower.

The main area consits of a lounge with a small library and writing area and the main dining area with a large wooden table. Meals are either held here or under the stars.

Location Olare Motorogi Conservancy is reputed to have the lowest vehicle density in the Maasai Mara region, while also having the highest concentration of big cats anywhere in Africa.

Mara Plains Camp is primarily accessed by seat-in plane air transfers to Ol Kiombo airstrip. On arrival at the airfield, the transfer to camp is approximately 40 minutes allowing time for game viewing. The camp is also accessible by private charter to the Olare Motorogi airstrip. Flying time from Nairobi Wilson airport is about 45 minutes.

May 2006 was a landmark date for conservation in the Maasai Mara with the formation of Olare Orok Conservancy bordering the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. This was the date when a deal was brokered with the 277 Maasai landowners that has since become the template for the Mara community wildlife conservancies and a blue-print for the sustainability of the greater Maasai Mara eco-system. The Conservancy later expanded to also encompass Motorogi lands, thereby becoming Olare Motorogi Conservancy. Tourism in the conservancy is limited to a maximum of 94 beds. As a result, the conservancy has once again become a haven for big cats and part of the annual wildebeest migration route. The conservancy now offers some of East Africa’s finest, year-round wildlife viewing.

Maasai Mara Conservancies
Due to the high concentration of big cats and the recurring “Great Migration”, the seasonal migration of the herds of animals, this protected area is the crown jewel of Kenya. Between July and October/November, over a million wildebeest and around 200,000 zebra spend time in the Maasai Mara before returning south to Tanzania's Serengeti.

Adjacent to the actual National Park, several conservancies have been established, in particular the Mara North, the Olare Motorogi and the Naboisho conservancy. The Maasai share their land with a few lodges, which allows for very private safaris without the crowds. In addition, the guide is allowed to leave the trails when interesting sightings are made - a huge advantage over the actual National Park, which is particularly crowded during the migration period.
