Ole Sereni Nairobi Kenya
1 night

Accommodation Ole Sereni is ideally located for an uncomplicated overnight stay in Nairobi. Its location opposite Nairobi National Park means it is not unusual for guests to spot a rhino or the odd gazelle while enjoying dinner.

The sympathetically furnished rooms could be better soundproofed. However, the hotel has a good outdoor restaurant where guests can sit comfortably in the evening. It also boasts an outdoor pool with bar, a large indoor restaurant and a rooftop bar.

Location The Ole Sereni is akin to an airport hotel and sits between Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the local airport Nairobi Wilson. If you are looking for a place to stay to avoid the traffic of Nairobi, then the Ole Sereni is a good choice.

The drive from the Ole Sereni to both airports is about 30 minutes.

Nairobi
Nairobi
Nairobi is the capital and the largest city of Kenya. It has an elevation of 1,795 metres above sea level, a pleasant climate, horrible traffic and is the starting point of all fly-in safaris to Kenya's safari parks.

Nairobi was created in 1896 as deopot for the construction of the railroad line that would connect Uganda with the port of Mombasa. The place quickly developed into a respectable city. Today Nairobi has a population of about 5 million people. Unfortunately, the infrastructure has not really kept up with the pace, the roads are poorly maintained and chronically congested. The Karen district in the south of Nairobi is named after the Danish writer Karen Blixen. Many of the accommodations we book are located here. The location is ideal, as both the international airport and the local airport Wilson are relatively easy and quick to reach. Those who spend more time in Nairobi or have to wait can visit the Karen Blixen Museum, the work of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust with the Elephant Orphanage near Nairobi National Park, or the Giraffe Center

Sirikoi Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Laikipia Kenya
3 nights

Accommodation As a small and intimate family-owned safari lodge, Sirikoi offers a sure sense of exclusivity and high level service, but also manages to be welcoming, comfortable and unpretentious.

The main lodge and dining deck, four luxury tents, Sirikoi Cottage and private Sirikoi House are perfectly positioned along the spring-fed Sirikoi stream, from which the lodge derives its name. All buildings have a view of the lawns leading out onto the wetland and waterhole, which has become a favorite passage and sanctuary for wildlife.

Each accommodation has a private outside deck to make the most of "armchair game viewing". All guest tents are spacious and tastefully designed, with unique decor touches, a comfortable sitting area, free-standing bathtub, rain-shower and fireplaces. The Cottage (4 guests) and private House (6 guests) have two and three separate bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, private living and dining rooms and decks.

Sirikoi House comes with a private vehicle and guide, as well as chef and team of staff. The cozy main mess or lounge is decorated with a combination of African art and textiles, impressive bronze wildlife sculptures, handmade furniture and fascinating artifacts collected by the family over four generations.

Sirikoi’s beautiful infinity pool is perfectly refreshing in the hot midday sun. The lodge offers an incredible farm to plate dining experience. The one-acre organic garden is a hidden gem found just behind the lodge. Avocado, banana, berries - over 80 fruits, vegetables and herbs from the garden make up the majority of the lodge’s fresh produce. A place to feel spoilt in a very authentic way.

Location Sirikoi Lodge is surrounded by 68,000 acres of the pure wilderness of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (Lewa Downs). The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an award-winning model for community conservation. Starting with only 15 black rhinos in 1984, Lewa’s rhino population has since risen steadily, making Lewa a true rhino conservation success story in East Africa.

Sirikoi is just a 20 minute drive west from the Lewa airstrip, which is served by both private charters and scheduled flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport – a 50 minute flight away.

Laikipia Plateau
Laikipia is a highland plateau (1700 - 2000m) in the center of Kenya, which extends from the slopes of snow-covered Mount Kenya to the deserts in the north of the country. The altitude of about 1800 meters above sea level and the proximity to the equator bring balanced temperatures with cool nights and pleasant warm daytime temperatures. The geology is as diverse as the animal world: forested valleys, river basins and open grass savannahs.

The area used to be a patchwork of huge ranches, and has now become a huge conservation story by turning the ranches into conservation areas where wildlife is only second to the Maasai Mara.

Half of the Kenya's black rhinos and half of the world’s Grevy’s zebras live here. Wild dogs were resettled and there are good chances to see one of the packs on safari. About 2'000 elephants live in the area and migrate between Mount Kenya and the Samburu area.

Income from the safari industry is used to support the local Samburu and Maasai communities.

Sasaab Westgate Conservancy, Samburu Kenya
2 nights

Accommodation Sasaab is a stunning blend of Moroccan and Swahili style. Each individual cottage is designed to offer majestic views of the landscape and offer a cooling retreat from the African heat. Sasaab has seven individual rooms and one family unit with two en-suite bedrooms and shared central area. Each room is over 100 m² and has magnificent, elevated views overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River. All rooms have private plunge pools and private en-suite open air bathrooms with showers and double sinks.

The lodge is located on Kenya‘s third largest river, the Ewaso Nyiro River, home to the proud members of the Samburu tribe. The lodge is built high above the river to protect it from the seasonal flooding as well as to take advantage of the spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. ‘Sasaab’ is the Samburu name of a local white flowering shrub (a sub-species of Ipomoea) that grows in this area.

Sasaab also has a main swimming pool, built on the hillside overlooking the river.

Location There are scheduled 1.5hr flights from Nairobi Wilson airport into Samburu National Reserve (Oyrx Airstrip) followed by a road transfer to Sasaab (approximately one hour). Guests can also arrive by private charter to Sasaab’s airstrip, just a short drive from the lodge.

Sasaab is located in the Westgate Conservancy on the western edge of the Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves. The Westgate Community Conservancy is home to over 600 Samburu families. Sasaab is closely involved with several local schools, the Westgate Community Conservancy and the Grevy’s Zebra Trust.

Samburu
Samburu
Samburu National Reserve is situated at the southeastern corner of Samburu District in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. It is the home of the proud Samburu who have lived here for generations. It is bordered to the south by Ewaso Nyiro River, which separates it from the Buffalo Springs National Reserve.

Ewaso Nyiro river draws wildlife in great numbers and creates a green oasis in an otherwise parched land. It’s a place of rich natural diversity with an astounding number of animals from huge majestic elephant to lion, leopard and cheetah and the «Samburu Special Five»: the Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Gerenuk antelope and Somali ostrich. Wild dogs are also regularly seen.

Your onward journey
By Vehicle Travel by road to Sarara
Sarara Namunyak Conservancy, Mathews Range Kenya
3 nights

Accommodation The remote Mathews Range mountains are a dramatic landscape, home to the local Samburu people whose age-old traditions, including the famed ‘singing wells’ are as much a part of the fabric of this land as the wildlife. Sarara means “meeting place” in the Samburu language.

Sarara sits on the edge of an escarpment. The secluded camp consists of only six double tents and the Sarara House (with two en-suite bedrooms, private plunge pool and private dining) spread out along the hillside. The tents are spacious with electric lighting and hot and cold running water. There is a wardrobe, toilet and sink inside the room and an additional bathroom with open air shower outside the room. Each tent has its own private terrace and morning coffee and tea are brought to your tent. There is a rock swimming pool at the main area, a perfect place to relax and watch elphants come to the water hole that is only a short distance from camp.

Sarara is supporting the local community and a lot of Sarara's income is invested back into the area, with funds being used to support a wide range of projects from conservation to education and healthcare. As a result Sarara and Sarara Treehouses have become vital lifelines for the local Samburu people, which make up some 1,200 families in the Namunyak community.

If you like tree houses, please have a look at the Sarara Treehouses as an option. Groups or larger families who seek a private option will choose the private Reteti House

Location There are scheduled flights from Nairobi Wilson airport into Samburu or Lewa Downs, followed by a road transfer to Sarara (1.5 hrs or 3.5 hrs). Private charter flights are available to Namunyak airstrip.

The camp is situated on the eastern side of the Mathews Range within the Namunyak Conservancy, a huge area of approximately 3439 km². It is a truly remote wildernes with only very few guests and practically no other vehicles.

Mathews Range
The Mathews Range is a mountain range that stretches from south to north for about 150km. It is surrounded by the plains of the Northern Frontier in Kenya, a remote and virtually untouched area. This is the home of many interesting tribes and successful conservation projects.

The Mathews Range sits in the Namunyak Community Conservancy and raises above the arid plains of the north. The highest point is Warges at 2688 metres above sea level. It is the final frontier before Lake Turkana and it offers some quite off the beaten track camps. A visit to this area does include wildlife viewing, but for most it is probably more about visiting remote areas, experience incredible wilderness, remoteness and some really interesting culturual interactions such as the "singing wells". A visit to the nearby Reteti Elephant Orphanage, Africa’s first community owned elephant sanctuary, is well worth your time. Further to the east, in the neighbouring Sera Conservancy, a population of rare black rhino can be tracked on foot from Saruni Rhino Camp. It’s here, at the foot of the Mathews Mountains, where one of the world’s most successful community conservation movements has come to life. Following two decades of poaching, Namunyak Community Conservancy was established in 1995 to promote wildlife conservation and allow the Samburu community to benefit from tourism, while protecting this wilderness and the many wildlife species living on their land. In the following 25 years wildlife recovered and today Namunyak Community Conservancy is a treasure trove of rare and often uncatalogued species. Namunyak serves as a critical wildlife refuge for many species and holds important northern populations of reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, leopard, African wild dog, impala lion, greater kudu and many bird species. The conservancy is particularly important for elephant as they move seasonally between the Mathews Range and Mt. Kenya respectively the Ngare Ndare Forest, a route they have been using for decades.

Visit of the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary
Visit  Reteti Elephant Sanctuary
Founded in 2016 and modeled after the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage in Nairobi, the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary takes in young elephants that have lost their parents in northern Kenya. A dedicated team of keepers develop a close bond with the elephants and hand-rear them until they are ready to be reintroduced into a wild herd. Guests are welcome to visit Reteti.

Visit the Singing Wells
Singing Wells  Samburu
A visit to the famous Singing Wells is certainly a highlight. Samburu warriors bring their cattle to these waterholes every day during the dry season. The warriors descend into the wells, which are up to 10 meters deep, form a human chain and sing traditional Samburu songs as they pass the water up from the wells. This fascinating ritual lasts several hours. Please note that it is not permitted to take photos.

Maasai Mara Conservancies
Due to the high concentration of big cats and the recurring “Great Migration”, the seasonal migration of the herds of animals, this protected area is the crown jewel of Kenya. Between July and October/November, over a million wildebeest and around 200,000 zebra spend time in the Maasai Mara before returning south to Tanzania's Serengeti.

Adjacent to the actual National Park, several conservancies have been established, in particular the Mara North, the Olare Motorogi and the Naboisho conservancy. The Maasai share their land with a few lodges, which allows for very private safaris without the crowds. In addition, the guide is allowed to leave the trails when interesting sightings are made - a huge advantage over the actual National Park, which is particularly crowded during the migration period.
