Kaya Mawa is a beautiful lodge on Likoma Island, one of the several islands in Lake Malawi. Both the main building and the rooms are tastefully furnished with fantastic attention to detail. With its pristine beaches, superb views, excellent service and fine cuisine, this paradisiacal dream was realised with a great deal of imagination and dedication. Each individual and unique room is constructed with natural materials, and built to blend in with the rocky environment.
A small path leads from behind the reception area / curio shop to the two premier rooms or suites (Nkwhazi & Mbamba), which crown a small rocky hill. These spacious suites are each equipped with a lounge, large deck, outdoor shower and plunge pool. Three standard rooms (Khuyu, Msekwa, Mbungu) sit on the water's edge directly beneath the suites. Although these rooms are slightly smaller, they do have direct access to the water via a jetty, ladder or small path.
A further standard room (Ngani) sits isolated on a small rocky promontory. This room has no real beach of its own to speak of, as this is situated on the other side of reception. The premier room Makungulu, on the same side as Ngani, reigns on its own private island, accessible by a wooden walkway and with outdoor loung area and direct access to the ocean.
On the reception side the beach is long and broad, several loungers invite guests to lay back and relax, and kayaks and sailboats sit ready for action. Two cottages for families (Ulissa & Yofu), each with two bedrooms, are situated directly on the beach. Another honeymoon suite (Madimba House) is located towards the end of the beach, and at the very end, built into the rock face, is another suite (Mainja House) with two bedrooms suitable for four friends or a family. The houses have their own plunge pool and large outdoor area. Ndomo Point House is ideal for a large family or those looking for total privacy.
The main building comprises an open lounge with white curtains and plenty of sofas and cushions, a bar and seating area, and a separate room for breakfast and lunch. Tables are set out along the beach for dinner, where guests eat privately beneath the stars.
Likoma Island is accessed by air from Lilongwe (flight time approximately 1 hour) or alternatively from Mvuu Lodge. It's a short journey from Likoma Airstrip to the lodge.
